Way to go Turbine!

Arrow have this planned, but Turbine usually hits it out of the park.

Their Hellraiser trilogy box was awesome. :-)

The open-matte version is what instantly sold me on the set. I went for the classic artwork but was very tempted by the new art, I probably would have gone for it if it wasn't for the big smile on the cloaked figure.

All I ask is that there are no forced subtitles. Too many European releases these days include forced subtitles for on-screen text and signage when there's absolutely no reason to do that- all subtitles should be removeable.

I don't really know the movie, I remember seeing it at one point and it being a huge flop. But I'm intrigued. Seems like a lot of care and discs. One thing that seems odd to me is not doing the open matte version in 4K. Why?

I went with the new boxart as the inner case have the classic art, but the movie is the main attraction and both look great.

'Cause it's just a bonus. The official format is 2.35:1.

why should a bonus be in a lesser format? just press the 4K.

Do you happen to have the link in which he states this??

A little annoyed by this. I would have preferred that cover A also offers the classic artwork for the inner case... I'm sure they do this so that we are tempted to take both versions.

Yes, but doesn't really matter in the end, the movie is the main attraction. :-)

I like the fact that you get both artworks, just pick your favourite as the main box and have the other in the inner case.

I think the main difference for the New Art motif could be that the Cover B capbox is printed on silver foil, and the Cover A digipak slipcase probably isn't.

is this going to be released in the US on a regular single disc non-collector's edition? because I'd like to grab this but I can't justify $80.

Well, at some point Arrow might give it a shot, if they get the transfer licensed and stuff...

I can give you all some Details about the new Turbine Edition because i have received a review sample of it.

I love the Design of the set and the whole Artwork!
But lets get straight to the important technical facts!

Disclaimer:
I can only review the 4K Remastered 1080p Blu Ray from the set because i dont own a 4K Display. I have a 4K Player but because i dont have a proper display it would be nonsense to write about the UHD Discs.
Im sure andreasy969 will write something about it if he even buy the set.

Picture Quality 4K Remastered 1080p Blu Ray:

ITS NO DNR HELL! First and most important information!
So please everybody relax. LSP Medien did the work on it. Thats the same company which did the original Dune Movie in 4K.

They did fantastic work on Frighteners!
The first thing you notice is how natural the picture looks. All the sharpening shenanigans from the Universal Blu Ray are gone!
It now has a natural appereance and the picture is sharp and detailed.
The Colors are much fresher and richer than the Universal Release.
And it has a beautiful light grain structure that gives the picture an organic and filmic look.
I cant see any signs of DNR but im sure some armchair experts here will find flaws like always
For me it looks absoluteley natural and thats its biggest strength!
It blows the universal release out of the water!

But Pictures are saying more than words.
I did a comparison with the Universal Blu Ray.
The pics are done in JPG because i did such a big comparison. I always check that my jpgs look nothing different to the pngs of course.

https://slow.pics/c/LrEkjcTE

I think i dont need to comment that any further.

Sound Quality:

Theatrical Version:
The Theatrical Version comes with English 5.1 and English 2.0.
Guess they are the same as ever and it sounds good.
I only skipped through a little because the real version for me is the Directors Cut.

Directors Cut:
The real labor of love was spent for the Directors Cut.
There is a new Dolby Atmos Mix. I dont have atmos so i can only listen to the TrueHD Core in 5.1.
HOLY GUACAMOLE!!!!!!!!!!!!
It sounds very aggressive and wonderful! I liked the 5.1 Audio for the Directors Cut on the 4-Disc DVD Set back then. That was the last time i saw the Directors Cut.
But this new Atmos Mix is way more powerful. Listen to the whole opening for example. The subwoofer has a lot of work to do and it is very dynamic
Or jump to the first cemetery scene with our Full Metal Jacket hero. The moment he fires his big guns are the real deal! You feel like your home cinema will explode. It also has a lot of split surround activity in that scene!
I could point out a lot more scenes.
The Frighteners Audio NEVER made so much fun. Its incredible!

For purists there is also the old English 5.1 Audio present and even the 2.0 Sound is there.
So everybody should be happy here!

Bonus:

The whole Laserdisc Making Of and Commentary is there which is very good already.
But Turbine did a complete new 95 Minute Documentary with new interviews. I didnt had the time to watch it completely but it seems very interesting.
On top of that you get the big book but thats only in german of course.

The Open Matte Version

This is a fascinating Bonus here. Frighteners was shot in Super 35 which is why an open matte version is possible.
What is really interesting here is that all Special Effects shots were produced Open Matte!
So to have this version as a Bonus is cool.

Overall i think i prefer the scope version. Sometimes there is too much dead space in the open matte version.
And in one screenshot i did (and it was coincidal) you can even see a bit of the dolly camera track at the bottom of the picture.
So its obvious that despite the open matte Special Effects Work it was composed for scope.
But as Bonus i think this is really cool anyway and doesnt hurt anybody.
And i will for sure watch that thing at least once.

The Open Matte Version is the Directors Cut and has the same Audio Tracks as the Scope DC Disc.

Here is a comparison between Scope and Open Matte:
https://slow.pics/c/aVZ62BK6

Picture 20 is the shot i mentioned with the Dolly Track
Pictures 16, 17, 19 and 21 are Effect Shots.

Overall verdict

I think the technical presentation is very good.
Picture Quality is fresh, natural and filmic.
The new Audio Mix is sensational.
And you also get a very nice designed Boxset plus a lot of Bonus Features.
So if somebody still doesnt like the release its fine because i have a lot of fun with it
