In this case, by purchasing that UHD edition of Waterworld you're actually backtracking as the Extended Cut is the better film. Plus the PQ on that Blu-ray looks fantastic so there's no real incentive to purchase the UHD. Universal will very likely release a UHD of American Werewolf at some point but we'll all have to decide whether or not we want to triple dip or not.

40th Anniversary is two years away.
If a 4K master exists, there will undoubtedly be a UHD released eventually. 2021 seems like a no-brainer
Arrow also released a regular edition of the "Limited" Waterworld CE, not long after that release, so it's also a safe bet that will happen with this as well. If you don't care about the swag, I doubt you will entirely miss out.

I'm one of the few people who finds the remastered Universal disc to be just fine when it's actually playing out on screen , and even beautiful compared to earlier releases. I saw no deleterious effects from the grain management, at least nothing that would have bothered me if I was seeing the film looking like this projected in a theater. That disc is NOT a wax/EE job as something like Cat People is.
Could it be bettered? Probably.
Do I personally need it to be bettered before I can fully enjoy it again. Not at all. And there are a slew of other films I would rather see get remastered before this does for a third time (Cat People is high on that list).
_______________

OK. I checked out the caps again on caps-a-holic and I will concede there is room for improvement, and some detail does look slurred. In motion, and to my eyes, it's not off putting, and I still appreciate the improvements- but Arrow does have the opportunity here to release a definitive presentation...at least on this format. Which should reign supreme for all of two years before Universal kicks out the UHD.

Definitely going to triple dip on this. Too bad we aren’t getting a 4K disc, but this should still look pretty great.

I can't wait to see the new 4K restoration from the original negative supervised by Landis and the new extras, time to also pawn my old 2016 BD which didn't look that great btw.

I need this. I have never ordered from Diabolik directly and it says that it will ship on or around Oct 29 so my question is do you think I will get it on or before Halloween?

I’m curious by the wording of “2018 4K restoration” nor any mention, or pertaining to, of this being an Arrow restoration. I wonder if Uni had planned an UHD for last year but got cold feet.

Diabolik typically ship when they receive the discs, which is usually 1-2 weeks prior to release date. As long as that release date isn't pushed back I am fairly certain it will be in your hands prior to Halloween.

maybe Uni was testing the 'UHD' waters with 'Waterworld' - not a great title to debut under this theory, but who knows, it's still a niche market - I'd rather own an actual 4K disc of 'American Werewolf' anyways - time will tell.

Until the 4K? This got an HD DVD release by Uni, so it is one of the titles they like to push out on new formats early on. Same was the case with Waterworld. Also, if you look at the leaked list of upcoming Uni titles, most were early HD DVD releases.

I love these LE sets. They look, sound, and feel premium. Even if I didn't like this movie (which I do) they are fun to collect. (Looking at you Hills Have Eyes 2). This will be an easy day one for me as well. Thankfully I still only have the original Blu Ray release so this will only be a double dip.

I had a feeling Universal would release this in 4K but I'll take the Arrow release with ease

Screw it I just placed the pre-order. Can always resale it later since its dual territory plus Uni UHD disc don't come out the gate for much anyway if one is released later down the line.

So it doesn't look like they'll be selling a standard disc only edition.

Not initially, but they likely will somewhere down the road once the LE has been out for a while or gone OOP. That's the usual routine.
