I think Torn Curtain is Hitchcock's most under-rated film.

Fantastic set, hard cardboard that appears quite durable, lots of nice tat, a few episodes from Hitchcock Presents / Hour shows and all the disks are in actual cases.

I can understand people being a little annoyed at how Psycho centric it is but as it’s my favourite Hitchcock film (and a top 10 of all time as well as being my favourite horror) I don’t mind.

It goes well next to my Turbine Psycho Legacy set.

Yep, same here. It's also alongside about 40 copies of the Psycho franchise on VHS/Beta Max from around the world and my original theatrical onesheets of Psycho II and Psycho III.

Which Turbine edition did you get? I picked up the big one with the book and letter.

Damn, you have me beat!

I own the standard and love it. Is the letter the same as the Psycho one in this set? The other extras are just posters, postcards and stuff in this set right? (Do Not Disturb, Bates Motel check in).

Psycho 2 really impressed me, one of the best horror sequels I’ve seen, 3 was pretty good too and even 4 had a great final 15 minutes, the TV movie is awful but also amazing at the same time and the remake is one of the worst films I’ve ever seen

I think the letter is the same, but I can't be sure.

Psycho has been my favourite film since I picked up a pre-cert VHS at a carboot sale around 30 years ago, and yes, I still own that pre-cert from CIC Video.

AFAIK, I own every variation of Psycho on UK VHS. From cardboard pre-cert and striped pre-cert to Hitchcock collection and beyond. The same goes for Psycho II, III and IV as well as the Bates Motel TV movie starring Bud Cort.

I own various VHS and Beta Max releases from the US, Australia, Germany, Poland, Portugal, Brazil, Japan and more.

The Turbine set is amazing, even if there are a couple of subtitling issues. The biggest issue I have is that the HD version of Psycho IV has been reformatted to widescreen and the SD version is the correct 4:3 when it should only have been 4:3 with no 'retro' SD version required.

Looks like there's an updated version of this set with 20 films instead of 18: https://store.hmv.com/store/film-tv/...ection-(hmv-ex

I assume the 'new' ones are just I Confess and The Wrong Man, both of which were released as Premium Collection titles? And maybe the newer version of Psycho recently released by Universal (which I still need to pick up). Anything new in the extras that anyone can spot?

It adds the Warner titles I Confess, The Wrong Man & Suspicion from the premium collection but loses Paramount’s To Catch A Thief.

Warner are distributing Universal stuff in the the UK now so I imagine this is more a replacement for the 14-film Universal box than the 18 film multi-studio box. Hopefully the fact that they are endlessly repackaging these will encourage the studios to bring more Hitch to UHD and Warner to get Mr&Mrs Smith and Stage Fright on Blu. I think Stage fright was mentioned as coming on a Warner Archive podcast last year.

That would just leave Under Capricorn and the Selznick productions in need of UK blu ray for Hitch’s US films. Surely Fremantle’s license of the Selznick’s must run out at some point

You'd think so but I guess we wouldn't know until someone like Criterion picked them up (and then they'd probably port Notorious and Rebecca over first). I think they're ABC Pictures, who IIRC are part of Disney, meaning Criterion are in the best position to acquire those (ditto Straw Dogs; and presumably other titles like Cabaret, Junior Bonner, The Heartbreak Kid, Sleuth, Silkwood, Prizzi's Honor etc).

Yes ABC is owned by Disney. Other than the Wes Andersons the films all the films Criterion licensed from Disney are via ABC.

I forgot we also need Foreign Correspondent. Not sure where the rights are in the UK. The DVD was by Universal in the UK (Warner in the US). Criterion licensed their Blu from Winchester same place they got Othello. If Universal licensed from Winchester then theoretically Criterion UK could port it over here.

Yeah it's bizarre that many key British Hitchcock films aren't available in HD in the UK...hopefully it shows up one day!

From what I recall, ABC Pictures and the Selznick library are different rights holders internationally that aren't Disney. In regards to Criterion acquisitions, many of the mentioned titles have already had US releases from different labels (Warner for "Cabaret", who also own the film in the US, and Kino for "Junior Bonner", "Silkwood" and "Pizzi's Honor") and I don't think Criterion would ever do a non-US exclusive release. Also, "The Heartbreak Kid" and "Sleuth" are owned by Bristol Myers Squibb and their asking price is too high (also the reason why the original "Stepford Wives" hasn't had a Blu).

Do you mean Disney don't own ABC internationally or that ABC don’t have the Selznick in the UK?

My list of Criterion-Disney films is from here:

https://criterionforum.org/Search/Licensor/16/1

The ones on Blu ray (which is just Rebecca, Notorious and Straw Dogs) are via ABC except the Wes Andersons and
Chungking Express which was from Miramax back when Disney owned them

My (newspaper freebee) fremantle DVDs for Rebecca and
Notorious both cite ABC as copyright holders. Same is true for the UK Blu of Straw Dogs

I believe those are all licensed from Disney for UK distribution, I think the Fr Carlotta Hitchcock set is also licensed off of Disney. Park Circus lists Disney for all of them, so it’s likely they own worldwide rights but have made it incredibly difficult for distribution in many areas, You can’t even get them digitally sadly.

Thanks Dailyan. I knew those other titles weren't released by Criterion in the US obviously, I just mentioned them as they were also produced by ABC and therefore may still be with Disney rights-wise (Kino Lorber managed to do a limited deal with Disney/ABC it seems). Good to know about those Bristol-Myers-Squibb titles, I doubt we'll ever see them on Blu-ray!

There’s also a region B release that came out in Germany.
