The review mentions that the film was digitally photographed. A substantial amount of the film was actually shot on 35mm film:

[edit] Ah, yes: the review for the regular Blu states this quite clearly ("Queen & Slim was digitally photographed") while the UHD review does not. Still, it goes to show that for all the tub-thumping that people do about film some folks can't tell it apart from digital anyway... |

I can always tell, especially on the big screen, since I’ve learned how to differentiate digital grain from authentic film grain. Digital photography has gotten better at replicating film colors though, and sometimes it works the other way too, with 35mm shoots getting noise-reduced in post (Suicide Squad being an example, along with the early MCU films). 35mm and high-end digital photography are pretty close at this point, which is why I think 16mm is the way to go if you want the analog film format to be noticeable as a stylistic choice.

Aye, that's why they chose 16mm on mother!: the DP said that modern 35mm stocks are so slick that they went with 16 to get an "automatic read" on the grain. Tarantino makes a lot of noise about shooting on film but OUATIH was virtually grainless in the 4K projektion I saw in the cinema. Rise of Skywalker is another one where it looks so clean it might as well have been digital.
2-perf 35 is another means of getting that grittier texture back too. |

The Last Jedi looked like a real film shoot, at least for many scenes (like the ones with Ray in the island with Luke), but you could've fooled me with RoS. If you told me it was an Alexa shoot, I would've believed you. Ready Player One and Detective Pikachu were other examples. OUATIH looked like film to me, though mostly because of the white specs I noticed in several shots. The colors were certainly very rich and vibrant.
But back to Queen & Slim, it was a very gorgeous film to watch on the big screen. The visuals were the best part of the film, and it makes sense that it was crafted by a prolific music video director. And yes, it definitely looked like a film shoot to me. When I first saw the trailer on the big screen before (I believe) OUATIH, I immediately could tell I was looking at celluloid. |

Thought Det. Pikachu looked very clearly film-based, but the other two I can understand if people got fooled (especially RP1).
Looking forward to checking out Q&S soon. Didn't get time to see it theatrically despite really wanting to. |

And here's where I have to be the contrarian (again) because the 'real world' stuff in RPO looks like film all day long, especially on the UHD. When they get into the digital world of coursh it looks moar digitall, what did people expect?

Watching this UHD rn and is it just me or is this disk very dark? The first 20 mins or so is basically a black screen. Feel like I’m getting some crush. Anyone else experience this?

I also watched the extras and noted most scenes were actually shot in bright lit rooms or outdoors. Was a little disappointing to see how they darkened the picture first and then raised black floor. But that's how it's often done nowadays. Other than that I had no complaints. Some scenes appeared to be shot on film rather than digital but the grain resolves very nicely. It didn't look fake anyway. |

I want this with a guaranteed slipcover but neither Walmart or Target carries it. BB does but they're curbside only. My store has 3 copies. I wish they would hurry up and open so I can look.
