I honestly can't believe this movie has sold out. It is just an awful movie. At this point I think VS could release "Raiders of the Living Dead" with two different slips, and sell out of 10,000 units.

I believe there is no accounting for taste, but there is also such a thing as (blind) buyer's remorse.

A movie doesn’t have to be good to be entertaining.

I have to say I blind bought this and was definitely entertained for 90 minutes, however I would not say the movie was "good". It reminds me of the crap $0.99 VHS's my friends and I would rent on the weekend in college

I know. There are a lot of "so bad they're good" films I love (Troll 2, Hobgoblins, The Devonsville Terror, Demons of Ludlow...). But this film I thought was just kind of terrible. And I don't care what people buy, or what they enjoy. I'm just sort of fascinated that VS has such a keen business model.
Offer a couple slips and the collectors snap up 5,000 copies of a Z-grade horror movie in a short time. If this was released by KL with no slip, it would most likely have trouble reaching 400 units sold in its lifecycle.

In my opinion, VS have much worse in their catalog.

You're absolutely right. It's a testament to the quality of their product and service. Other labels must be envious, but no one is repeating their formula. As for Spookies, I'm not really a fan. I got it because I pre-ordered the secret titles. With movies like this the saying is true: one man's trash is another's treasure. There are plenty of movies of dubious quality that I love, so I avoid hating on other peoples tastes.

Vinegar Syndrome titles sell so well because they’re basically risk free purchases. If you don’t like the film you’re guaranteed your money back and usually more by selling it.

Good point. And to clarify that I am not bashing them (just a movie I hated) I think VS is great, and own a couple dozen of their titles.

For me, it harkens back to a time in my youth(the 80's), renting horror movies at a local video place where it didn't matter about the quality, just that it was fun. Spookies had an awesome cover art, that I rented it quite a few times. Even caught it on cable whenever it showed up.

I know it's not a "good movie", but it's sentimental to me of a better simpler time. I still have fun with it's zany ineptitude. It also along with quite a few others makes my collection feel like that ole video store I used to inhabit. A taste of home.

Ahh, that makes sense. My childhood favorite video rental horror film was "Deadtime Stories". An awful film that I am glad to own on BD, mainly for nostalgic reasons. It seemed a lot better when I was 14.

The reason VS titles sell out is because *every* single title that they've ever released has looked gorgeous. Untinkered with. No DNR. Film Grain. They care, and it shows. I can't say enough good about the company, unlike Criterion, Shout!, Kino, et al. Severin and Blue Undergroud are at the same level, although Severin has been guilty more than once of trying to cram too much on a BD25 when a BD50 should have been used instead, and PQ suffered due to this *****rldy decision to save a buck or two and use BD25 where BD50 was called for. Dozens of cases where VS has stepped up to the plate and utilized BD50s to maximize encode bitrate and PQ.

SPOOKIES is just their latest and another fabulous transfer hit out of the park. The film is cheesy fun. The company isn't: deadly serious about producing the best quality BDs they're humanly capable of.

Spookies was a blast. It's so bad, ineptly acted by people who "think" they are acting, baffling decisions all over the place. I loved it. You could tell they were really trying and their passion shows, they just weren't very good. The special effects were impressive though for what I assume was shoe string budgets.

I agree, I knew going in it was going to be horrible, but I love watching a movie like this and then watching the accompanying documentary to get the behind the scenes story.
I find it absolutely fascinating.

I did the same thing with "The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)" - I watched it and then watched "Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau". Really amazing the things that went on in that production!

I need to do that exact same thing, rewatching The Island of Dr Moreau and following it up with the Lost Soul doc has been on my list of stuff to do for ages.

You'll be fascinated splintersan - Stanley is always interesting no matter what he's doing, and the stories about Kilmer and Brando are both cringe worthy and hilarious, just a bonkers production. Well worth your time!

So does this movie deliver on the salacious looking cover art, or is that just a tease? I love 70's/80's movies when the ladies strip down.
