I wonder at what resolution was it rendered back in 1998, or maybe it was re-rendered later.

It says Dolby Atmos on the disc in the steelbook picture, so it seems to be correct. Strange then that it is only 5.1 on Disney+.

I think this was 2K so 856 x 2048 file.

Yes, I think you are right. If I'm not mistaken, TS1 was originally rendered somewhere around 720p, but then re-rendered in 2K in time for the 3D re-release.

Possibly the reason these discs aren't coming out until now is they didn't complete the Atmos remixes until recently.

Just finished watching this.

All I can say is wow. I know I've been pretty hard on Disney but this UHD blew me away.

The resolution bump really brought out the textures in the plants, rocks, ground and insects. A much needed increase in detail.

HDR really shined (no pun intended) as well. Specifically the nighttime and underground scenes, as well as the rain scene near the end. All the colors really popped off the screen. Hats off to Disney and Pixar... gonna watch WALL-E tomorrow, can't wait.

If there's one area where Disney has done a great job on this format, it's the Pixar releases.

The audio can still leave a lot to be desired -- but the PQ for virtually all of the Pixar releases have ranged from pretty damn good to outright amazing.

Interestingly the framing was also recomposed and re-rendered at 4:3. The full screen version was not pan & scan from the 2:39:1 frame.

You have to raise the volume level. You just can't switch between tracks.

Just because it's louder, doesn't mean better.

I remember reading at some point, prior to this getting released on home video: DVD; Pixar wanted to a remix that was more immersive, specifically adding sound above you and with Dolby Atmos doing just that, creating a truly 360 degree tapestry of sound effects and positioning, that not only emulated from above but to the sides and back, EX could somewhat do that, but with 7.1 and Atmos, object based mixing would make it much more holospheric. I can't wait to hear, if that achieved that intended effect on the UHD disc.

Pixar has always been pushing the audio state of the art.

Toy Story 2 was the first animated feature in Dolby Digital EX.

Toy Story 3 was the first Dolby Surround 7.1 release.

Brave was the first Dolby Atmos release.

'Toy Story 2' was also mixed in 8-channel SDDS (five front / stereo surround)

Sounds like the stuff that looks great on Disney+ is looking outstanding on disc. Which is good! But what does it mean for the older Star Wars releases? Probably not good!

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't think I can tell a difference between the 4K version on Disney+, and the 4K Blu-Ray, from a purely visual standpoint.
