The way I read that article, Villeneuve wants the luxury and fan goodwill afforded to him by a popular IP, and he wants to play around in the universe already created for him, yet, also doesn't want his new idea to further connect to anything within that universe?

Hard to have it both ways, and it's even harder to create your own world.

I'm all about a new cyberpunk-ish film noir type project from Denis, but, if you really want it to stand on its own, it had better be really good.

A straight adjusting for inflation just doesn't cut it when trying to figure out what something would cost in another era. For example a VFX guy on 2010 back in 1984 mentioned that the folks there did some spitballing and figured Kubrick's 2001 (10.5 mil in 68) would have cost something like 96 mil by 1984, and that is because more than inflation figures in -- there's methodology.

Consider just one aspect of BR: given that motion-control miniature shooting was always deemed very expensive (and presumably the main reason folks rushed to embrace CG in the 90s even if it usually didn't look remotely as convincing), duplicating the work on orig BR would probably cost a helluva lot more than inflation estimates, and that would have been true a decade or 15 years later, let alone 35 years later. And that's even with the caveat that the BR VFX were only about 3.5 mil of the overall cost (and that included a large number of shots completed and cut.)

Yeah - seems risky although I really liked how BR2049 played out so Im moderately interested. Not sure what else you do with any existing characters though unless Ford/daughter are brought back into the fold but that would actually suck. I find the final scene of BR2049 to be absolutely wonderful/beautiful. Leave it as is. Sometimes being told or shown LESS is really MORE.

He could create all new characters in that same universe per se but thats a tough sell. Dunno. Curious what happens here.

I agree. The story for these characters was completed & I enjoyed it very much. I'd like to see what he could do with an original idea and fresh characters.

Just make it a TV series about different characters set in the same world. I could go for a weekly show where a Blade Runner follows clues to find various Replicants. I'm not optimistic about financing another Blade Runner movie or even the second half of Dune. But I'm sure they'd fork over whatever for another Transformers movie. Ugh.

There was talk about developing a live-action TV series a couple of years ago, but for one reason or another, it never happened.
