Hmmm. I don’t have Apple TV and won’t get it for one show. I am a fan of the novels but I’m not sure this will stay true to them enough. The cast has some decent names but also some suspect character choices have been made here. Big budgets don’t guarantee anything. But, I do hope it’s good since sci-fi that doesn’t suck is hard to come by these days. Good luck with it.

You won’t subscribe even for one month to watch it when all the episodes have been released?! This might be Game of Thrones for sci-fi, but without the, uhm, “lacking” final season.

I got a year’s free sub to Apple TV when I bought my latest tablet. That was back in February. I haven’t bothered watching anything on it so far, but I might as well give this a shot. If I like it great if I don’t so be it. Certainly not getting sucked in by the trailers, trying way too hard.

I feel bad to have not seen any of FOR ALL MANKIND yet. When I got sent links for some (did articles on both seasons), found you had to do an authentication involving the cloud and that looked like way too much security trouble to be worthwhile.

I do still want to watch it, because it is probably as close as I'll ever get to seeing an adaptation of Ben Bova's novel MILLENNIUM, a book I worshipped as a teen and used as a basis for practice when learning to write screenplays. Even now when I reread it, I am imagining 70s era Goldsmith scores playing against it.

Well, it's not really about the books.

TVline:

Goyer also understood that adapting a story that was originally published in 1942 meant making notable changes to better reflect today’s world, like switching the story’s key heroes — Gaal, who is Dr. Seldon’s apprentice, and Salvor, a leader of the colony tasked with compiling important human knowledge — from white men to Black women. “I was conscious of the fact that there were a lot of people that were underrepresented in a lot of these sort of seminal works,” he explains. “I knew that I wanted this show to break through not just the hardcore fans, but to everyone — the people that haven’t read the books, the people that aren’t fans of science fiction. So that was the first decision I made.”

Goyer assembled a diverse writers’ room comprised of a majority number of women and people of color, as well as writers with different sexualities. “I just said, ‘I want us to get into it and debate, and I want the show to reflect the audience of today,” he shares.

When I saw the trailer for the series, I was blown away. Just finished watching the first episode and it was decent enough but it just felt like it dredged on too long, like there was too much exposition. But, I'll be sticking with the rest of the series to see how it turns out. But, I was reading an article that someone wrote up on the premiere and I have to agree with them. That, this Foundation still hasn't been adapted but that they've adapted certain ideas of the original source material.

The shows creators have already said that the story will conclude in ten episodes but that the show-runners have a plan for 80 episodes and that it'll go beyond the first season.

I'm about to jump into the second episode.

I think that's what nobody gets. Not everyone signs up for every subscription service under the sun. While I have Peacock as a Comcast subscriber, I also pay for Amazon Prime, mostly for the free shipping. These streaming shows, some I enjoy while others I have no interest in but I do find "alternative" ways to watch them.

I've watched shows like The Mandalorian, Loki and Foundation because these are show that have generally piqued my interest. I purchased seasons of Snowpiercer, The Expanse and His Dark materials because they were around $10-15 per season.

Subscribing to these different services, you might as well have cable. I just don't think the Streaming Wars are quite over.

Im sure - but honestly, we cant keep up with everything as it is. The last thing I need is more shows to que up! Between D+, Amazon and Netflix.... forget it. I have way more than enough to watch. Im a big movie fan too and I prefer physical media for those and that also "eats" into viewing time. Just so much you can watch, right?

That being said, if this series turns out to be universally reviewed as truly amazing we'll have to investigate options. Maybe they'll do a 4K disc release?

100% true - I cut the cable cord back in 2010. More than 10 years ago. One of the main reasons was to save money and of course got sick of feeling like we were paying for a bunch of stuff we didnt watch. No doubt though that people get bad at math when "they stick it" to cable/satellite only to now have 6-8 streaming services that they subscribe to for more $$$$. It adds up quick. As I said above - there is only so much TV time, at least for me and the wifey. Cant keep up with it anyways.

I want “Foundation”, not something inspired by it.

Looks like a pass for me.

I'd like Foundation too, but it hardly lends itself to a TV show that will get ratings. A talky sci-fi show with new characters and jumps in chronology in every episode, with lots of people standing around discussing the ramifications of the action and politics happening offscreen?

The difference is that you can easily subscribe and unsubscribe with a few clicks. If you are frugal, simply wait until the season is complete, pay 5 bucks for a month, binge, and unsubscribe.

Just a reminder for those that might want to watch this but don't want to pay for yet another streaming service, Target Circle has a free 4 month trial for Apple TV+. The offer will remain available to redeem until June '22 if you want to wait until something else comes along.

I thought I remembered reading some articles about how you need Apple TV or an iPhone in order to use the Apple + subscription service. Everything about Apple has been to integrate all of their services into one, ignoring other platforms and services. I think that's why a lot of people have been staying away from it.

Nope. The app is available on tons of devices. I use it on Fire TV and Chromecast w/GTV. I think it's on Roku and various TVs as well.

Then I stand corrected. I know that when it first launched, there were a lot of people saying it was proprietary to Apple's platform.

Absolutely on Roku. That is how I watched it during my free year.

I understand that Foundation it is low key and cerebral versus flashy and action oriented.

But that should make it easy to make a low cost show that will appeal to a select audience.

Streaming has a business model where having a select audience tuning in for a specific show makes lot of money for the streamer. Every million subscribers for Apple generates $60 million a year.

I don’t know how much it would cost to make a show that is true to Asimov’s work but I know a far more expensive show has failed to earn my subscription.
