Yeah, I really liked it. Many of my friends who've seen it love it too. It's brilliantly acted throughout.

Yeah, I watched it this past weekend for the first time in 10 years, and really enjoyed it. I think my appreciation with the history of film has changed in the last decade, which is why I think I enjoyed it even more than ever.

I love this movie but I felt like I was watching a dvd. One of the most disappointing transfers I’ve seen in a long time.

Yeah, no. We all have opinions, but this doesn't look like a DVD by a long shot. Anytime I upgrade a title from DVD to Blu-ray, I check both and the details on this are much better and crisp. Vibrancy is better and the day scenes all look great.

It's not a showcase title, but your entire statement is completely hyperbole.

How does it stack up to the HDDVD?

I’m glad you like it Mr. Togo, but my statement is not hyperbole. I also own both and comparing the two, very little difference.

Again, no. It's not a showstopper, but it still looks very good. Doesn't lack in detail that the DVD does. Compare the day scenes again and the differences are completely noticeable.

There’s no shortage of Day scenes or facial close ups and they all underwhelm. On an average dvd to bluray upgrade, I don’t have to strain to find the better of the two. This one, I gotta really look for it. The best compliment I can offer this is I can read the newspaper article with Rita Hayworth in it better on the blu. Everything else is marginal.

Incorrect. Looks at the scene where Adrian Brody is talking to the maid at the start of chapter 6. On the Blu-ray you can see all the crusty details on her face to the ruby red lipstick she is wearing which isn't as apparent on the DVD. The film has a lot of detail. Maybe you got the DVD by mistake, but at the end of the day this release has great detail and doesn't come close to being underwhelming.

Also, by looking at the first page of your collection you have a ton of films that have less clarity and details than this release. 48 Hrs, the original 12 Monkeys release, the 40 Year Old Virgin, 28 Days Later, etc. That's simply your first page. I'm surprised you're quick to say this has marginal improvement over the DVD when you have a plethora of films in your collection that have much WORSE transfers.

I see it. Chapter 10 on the dvd. Sure it looks a little better, but it’s very minor. I’m not trying to convince you to not like it, I’m simply not seeing the improvements you are. To better put it, the improvements you see as substantial, I only see as marginal. I can only trust what I’m seeing right in front of me and I’m sad to say it was very disappointing. I’ve spent the whole evening going back and forth between the two with nothing but underwhelming results. Let’s agree to disagree on the pq but let’s agree to agree that it’s great movie.

I also have the remastered 12 Monkeys. 28 Days Later by design will never look good. I’ve never stated that 48 Hours looks good. 40 Year Old Virgin looks terrible, as far as I know there is no better version.

Kino uses a couple of different types of case, the standard Viva Elite style and a slightly thicker kind that uses a harder type of plastic. Shout Factory also use both types of cases.

Just got my order of this from Amazon and am watching it now. This looks like a dvd era master put onto blu-ray. It may be better than a dvd, but only slightly. It doesn't look bad, but it sure doesn't look good. It would likely look better if it had had a new scan done, unless it was shot digitally. IMDb said it was cinematographer Johnathan Freeman who went on to do 12 episodes of Boardwalk Empire & 17 episodes of Game of Thrones. Were those shot digitally?

The end credits indicate that it was finished with a digital intermediate, so it is a nearly fifteen year old master.

You are right... 2k digital... BUT I still find the bluray to be a BIG improvement over the DVD and right up there with the HD-DVD too.
