Avatar gets way too much disrespect. It's one thing not to like it or to think other movies released at the time were better; as much as I love Avatar, even I think it was the third-best movie of 2009 at best. But people often go out of their way to shit on it and I just don't get that. (Not aimed at SweetieMan, just generally.) It's still a stunning piece of sci-fantasy filmmaking on just about every level, not just technical, even if its story is derivative of movies that weren't all that great to begin with.

If we talking Avatar. I like it! It’s not the most amazing thing, but I think that third act battle trounces most big CGI battles of the last 10 years. I also found it way more engaging than Dances With Wolves! (Sorry, not sorry, but I can’t stand Kevin Costner). I need to rewatch District 9.

I guess because both are 2009 alien movies that were nominated for best picture.

Because people feel the need to compare A with Z and X with B and can't understand that you can like both for different reasons.

Absolutely love this movie, it's very underrated and I feel like a lot of people have not seen it.

I don't expect much of a resolution bump, as the bluray looks pretty sharp, if memory serves. Looking forward to the HDR and sound enhancements, though.

Online they were saying something like this takes about 3 years to produce so when it was discussed a bit more in 2019 by him maybe by 2022 you'll see District 10.

They also dealt with racism disguised as sci fi movies and the main lead gets turned into an alien and understands their struggles.

Well said. I got sucked in by the pre-release hate at the time (same thing happened with Chappie) and was determined to hate it.

I learned my lesson with those two though. Wait until you have seen them before believing internet hyperbole. I liked both films a lot - both have their faults but are well worth it. I liked District 9 more than those two mind!

Love District 9. Unfortunately, I haven't enjoyed another movie from the director, Chappie and Elysium.

I've never hated Avatar (though the shorter the cut, the better IMO) nor do I think it's the greatest sci-fi action-adventure masterpiece ever made, for me it gets unfairly maligned/lauded either way. But beware knocking anything that Blomkamp has ever done, for ye will awaken Sweetie's wrath!

Still haven't seen D9 lol

I've notice that Sharlto Copley have been cast in Neill Blomkamp's most recent movies, what is their relation?

District 9 is great. It's got a very raw and authentic feel to it with the documentary style, at certain moments, and what looks like a fair amount of improv from the actors. It doesn't hurt that the effects and audio are pretty top notch too. It's definitely worth a watch.

Avatar is still the best 3D movie I have ever seen (by miles). The story is heavy-handed but the 3D is still incredible and a big reason why I bought a 3D TV.

District 9 kicks ass, and I'm not a huge sci-fi fan, particularly of CGI-era movies. I, personally, think it's a lot better than Avatar (although I don't hate that movie by any means), with a stronger story and thematic impact, considering the history of its setting.

Quote:
Blomkamp was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of sixteen, he met Sharlto Copley, who had also attended Redhill High School in Johannesburg. Copley provided Blomkamp with the use of computers at his production company, for Blomkamp to pursue his passion and talent for 3D animation and design. In return, Blomkamp assisted Copley in creating 3D work for pitches on various projects. Blomkamp was 18 when he moved to Vancouver with his family, where he enrolled at the Vancouver Film School.
Copley gave Neill access to media and equipment.
