Love this movie. It's one of my favourite Tom Cruise movies and love the characters in it.

I do recall there being quite a few scenes with digital noise. I wonder how that will translate on UHD? This movie does have a massive focus on lighting, so I'm sure, like in a lot of other cases, that's where most of the improvements/changes will be.

Those are a bit latter of course but I believe in theory digital cameras were operating beyond standard DR by 2004 so there should be room for improvement there still.

Cinematographer Dion Beebe won a Bafta award for his work on Collateral, claiming that shooting portions of the film digitally was working with an 'experimental format'. He fought tooth and nail to get Michael Mann to allow him to shoot interiors on film where there was no benefit to shooting digitally, and the differences are like night and day.

I would take the Viper and the Genesis over the Red line.

All three were shot on the Genesis which was and is a fine camera, but it had a much larger imager than the Viper (Super 35 width vs the tiny 2/3" CCDs) and improved dynamic range so it's not quite apples to apples.

That said, the Viper was able to output a 10-bit 4:4:4 log image (converted from its linear 12-bit sensors) and wasn't hamstrung by ye olde HDCAM, the IMDB tech specs might be incorrect as this was seemingly recorded to the much improved HDCAM-SR, so as with Revenge of the Sith there might still be a decent amount of DR to play with.

But on Collateral they didn't actually use the logarithmic output because the image was in this 'raw' space with no colour correction, looking very flat and washed out, and this still being very early days for HD capture no-one gave any thought to adding in a conversion LUT downstream to 'normalise' the image for immediate playback on monitors.

So they used the linear RGB 4:4:4 output instead with video processing built-in to tune the image how they liked, but as it was no longer a 'raw' capture I wonder how much DR was actually captured in any given shot. I guess we gonna find out.

Most days if you ask me what my favorite Michael Mann movie is, the answer will most likely be Heat. But some days, every now and then, I just might say it's Collateral.

His production company and his former one had an overall deal there for years.

Like many here this one is day 1!

Cruise as a bad guy just works so well. Especially that unconventional grey look. Now...do I sell the steelbook or keep it to put the 4K disc in...

Thanks for the linkage to the article. I wonder what the creative differences were that led Paul Cameron to quit the film?

Same here. It can be either on any given day in terms of overall enjoyment, but I think Heat is his crown jewel.

I'd go with Last Of The Mohicans, IF someone would release a version of the film on blu that doesn't look like it's been shot at the bottom of a mineshaft... Absolutely hate the transfer on the Director's Definitive Cut.

Back to back announcements from Paramount, huh.

Hopefully There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men can join soon.

The newest French and Australian releases have the theatrical cut with the original color timing. French seems to be the best one, the Australian release uses a dated master with lots of print damage and pitch issues on the audio.
