I Wake Up Screaming was shot before Maltese was released, so it is basically the same time and not inspired by the latter.

Some say The Letter is a 1940 noir too, and I don't disagree.

Even Raoul Walsh's They Drive By Night pre-dates all of the ones we've mentioned. Another pre-Maltese noir (and a great one) is Flight from Destiny (1941).

(Stranger on the Third Floor is a great film, btw )
I’ve heard SotTF cited as the first full-fledged noir much much more than any other film, not even close. I don’t agree that it’s evenly split. And since SotTF was released before TMF, I think the Czar is mistaken. SotTF was noirish in a way that TMF wasn’t. If that makes any sense.

I've long thought that Stranger on the Third Floor (1940) is the first noir, since it's the first Hollywood film to intentionally marry the psychological tensions that would become staples of the genre with an overtly chiaroscuro style.

The preorder link on moviezyng.com states: "Note - This is a replicated Blu-ray product." Does that mean BD-R?

I don't think so. I think it's just a technical disclaimer.

If you look at other movies on MovieZyng, ones that are Blu-ray without the logo, their page says this:

BD-R (Blu-Ray Recordable) Product: This Product is manufactured on demand.

Sorry but this what is being sold at the moment? A regular second run of pressed discs? I've never seen this "repliacated" business.

Moviezyng.com updated their pre-sale link: "BD-R (Blu-Ray Recordable) Product: This Product is manufactured on demand."
"Important Information: Product manufactured on demand in BD-R format. It will play in nearly all leading Blu-ray players that have the latest firmware updates. Xbox One does not support BD-R playback."

I have a copy on the way. I'll update the thread with the pressed/BD-r info as soon as I know.

Thanks to all who alerted the community of this change in product description. I cancelled my preorder from amazon. We all have little things that burrow under our skins more than most. For me, using the blu ray logo to sell BD-R products is annoying.

For now, I have canceled my order at Bull Moose and will wait and see how this pans out. I had a feeling it would be burned and like a lot of us I posted my concerns after the announcement. I have never known Film Detective to release a pressed Blu so it's not surprising, but will still be disappointing.

Same. Very disappointing to see that it may be a BD-R, but I guess we will know for certain within a couple days.

Hello all. I'd like to clarify that The Film Detective Blu-ray version of "The Sin of Nora Moran" is a pressed disc. There was a glitch in the metadata that was issued out to retailers that led to some sites showing a BD-R. That is being corrected by the distributor. Because retail sites have a lot of automation in the data feed processes, it can take time to get the right designation up so it "sticks". But, rest assured, the Movie Zyng provided disc's are pressed (replicated). I believe the same is true for other retailers. Hope that helps address some of the concerns raised.

Agreed. It's where I've always drawn the line for embarkation as well.

And, yes, I use TOUCH OF EVIL as the last of the "Classic Noir" period as many do. Everything after that is "Neo Noir" for me. I don't use the term "Modern Noir."

I've always thought Touch to be the final film noir, but I've since thought of Odds Against Tomorrow as the final, having come out the following year.

Thank you both for coming on the forum and clarifying the details of this great release. I'm looking forward to reception of the disc.
