We don't know what happens to Number One etc. We do know what Pike's fate is, but they turned that on his head by allowing him to know as much as the audience does. That has unexplored potential.

I love the Enterprise redesign. I particularly like how they've designed the ships interior with nods to the original design, just made to look less like MDF boards with bits stuck on.

Don't watch it if it's not for you, but I'm really looking forward to it. A return to standalone episodes will be very much appreciated after 2 arc heavy shows.

Tbh, had we not already seen Pike, Spock & #1 in DISCO then I’d probably have eye-rolled at “yet another prequel”. However, we have seen them, and for my money the chemistry between those characters has me excited for this. I don’t mind DISCO, but for me the characters are the weakest part of the show. Star Trek IMO is at its best when it’s telling captivating stories played out by characters you’re invested in. That was certainly the case with TOS, TNG and DS9, for me at least. SNW is already halfway there before it’s even aired.

And amen for going back to episodic stories. Serialisation has been done to death already. Even the season-long storylines. I’m loving the idea of going back to something looser like TNG.

I’m more excited about SNW than anything post-DS9.

Sixteen years of age on September 8, 1966, I turned on our new RCA color TV and watched the debut of Star Trek. Never been more excited to watch a television show's first broadcast before or since. My favorite subsequent series was DS-9, but I have loved every single movie or TV series since TOS, including Discovery. But when this debuts, I think I may feel akin to how I felt all those 54 years ago.

BTW, I really enjoyed the Ensign Spock episode on Short Treks. The chemistry continues.

The irony doesn't escape me about serialisation - a bane of Voyager that it didn't tackle the full potential of it's situation by serialised storytelling like DS9 did, and Enterprise embraced it too late in the game. Fast forward 20 years and we're now sick of serialised seasons and clamour for a return to the older format.

Completely agree with the observation.

20+ years ago serialisation was a relatively newish idea for TV shows. DS9 aside (thank you Ira!) Trek was late to the party and only really climbed that hill towards the end when the TNG-era Trek was on life support. Since then, shows like Lost have paved the way for serialisation overload. Don’t get me wrong, I love me some serialisation as much as the next person, but it doesn’t all have to be that way. As per above I’m just really looking forward to some episodic stories from the Trek universe again.

Serialisation, darker tone, yeah I’ve had enough of that for a while now thanks...

Has the potential to be the best new ST show considering we already know the leads are solid actors.

Something with the same spirit and sense of hope as TOS is what I would like. Anson Mount did a great job and I'm keen to see Rebecca Romijn as well!

Was meh on Discovery and didn't care for Picard at all but I'll give this a try. Going to be very bittersweet knowing how Pike eventually ends up.

I'd love a new Standalone show. I am sick of Prequels and Discovery is the worst thing I have ever seen on Television so I have serious doubts this will be anything more. Who knows maybe I'm wrong and it will be awesome. But that still doesn't mean a prequel about characters we already know and (Spock) explored for 50 plus years now should be made over moving the story foreword. But lets waste more time on this nonsense when the actors from the other shows continue to get so old we can't use them anymore....

Well we know that at some point Number One participated in a special project lending her voice to Federation starship engineers.

I just wish they’d make a series that isn’t a prequel. Go forward, not back.

I'll definitely tune in for Pike. He was the best thing to come out of three seasons of Discovery.

Well, we have three now; Lower Decks, Picard, and with Discovery now set in the far future it’s gone from prequel to sequel.

Though effectively, they are all prequels to Discovery now. I love the irony in that.

I really like Picard, can't wait for the next season, but I think the fans want more of a crew and ship exploring new places while building its characters. Lower Decks was fun.

I tried Discovery twice, but I just couldn't get into it.

TNG has a different feel than TOS, but was still very much Star Trek. Even Voyager and Enterprise felt like Star Trek, but in my opinion the characters and plots weren't as good. Discovery feels like a different sci-fi show altogether.

I'm only a casual fan of Star Trek. Deep Space Nine is my favorite ST series and The Undiscovered Country is my favorite ST movie.

What did you try? Season 1 is darker and has a (avoiding spoiler) totally different setup to a traditional Trek show with lead captain.

Season 2 introduces more classic Trek elements with a lot of success, but the storytelling is very much in the season 1 vein and Burnham is still the main driving force of the plot.

Season 3 is a bigger change. The storytelling now makes the crew feel like a cohesive whole than a selection of supporting cast and it's very much more Trek-like in it's ethos. Shit has happened, but it leaves you feeling more hopeful for the future again.

I have to admit I like them all, but season 3 felt like the show latching onto something that works best. Like TNG I suppose, which didn't find out exactly what it wanted to be until then.

Re TNG being different but was still ST, most people accept that these days, but for a time the same was said of TNG about not being ST. It did take a few seasons for fans of the original to embrace it. I remember my mother commenting “it just doesn’t get exiting does it” during a season 4 episode. I’d say TNG is as different a show from the original as Discovery is to TNG - whilst still being ST. The shows are each a reflection of the time they were made in and are a good representation of how TV making has changed over the decades. Will people in 30 years say Discovery still feels like ST despite the difference in style to TNG-era Trek? Who knows, for what it’s worth in terms of tone I very much felt season 1 was more in-line with the original series, and then season 2 for more obvious reasons. Season 3 did feel like a different show to me, that’s not a bad thing, still getting used to it though. In any case, I’ve come to understand that when it comes to ST, whilst you still hope for quality, in terms of style and tone it’s best to leave any expectations at the door. I think on balance I’d still rather have Trek that challenges any of my established perceptions of what ST should be (such as Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks) than a Trek that becomes lazy and gets stuck in a rot churning out the same lazy conveyer belt material (such as Voyager).

I've been watching the first two seasons of Discovery and to me the problem with it is that it's too Burnham centric. Makes you wonder why it has any other characters. And has been stated by another review is that it tries to shoehorn Michael into every major story.
