Kinda, but worse.
They really hammered the f*** out of it with DNR. Now I know that Olympus doesn't have the best source out there. As pointed out earlier in the thread, it looked rough as f*** theatrically and the BD is no different. However, for all it's tinkering and tomfoolery, the BD does resemble film to a degree. It's inconsistent, with it jumping from grained footage, to smooth CGI and back again, but there is a texture in there. The UHD has none of this. Nothing resembling fine details whatsoever. It's barely HD, never mind 4K. Banding, black crush, noise reduction, sharpening, artifacts caused by the sharpening, all present. It's like something from one of those YouTube channels that upscales random movie footage to 4K and adds fake HDR. London improves a helluva lot on Olympus. There's some texture there and some decent attempts at HDR. However, this is damning with faint praise, as it's still been given a lick of DNR, making it a largely mediocre presentation. Something quick about the localization attempts: Olympus has German location titles in the print, but player generated English subs that translate all titles and foreign dialogue. London only translates any foreign dialogue. Boke! Last edited by Sky_Captain; 09-30-2020 at 07:02 PM. |

I recently got the HK Olympus has Fallen (with the 7.1 audio), so thought I'd revisit London and do a binge watch. Regards the transfer, I've now watched it yet, but I did see a reasonably favourable review. Apologies in advance if I'm not allowed to post external reviews.
https://www.avforums.com/reviews/lon...y-review.18092 I will be watching them this weekend hopefully. But... regards London, the recent Wrath of Man UHD being 24p as well made me rethink this one as another remux with the DTS-X track. Basically what I've done is use mkvtoolnix to change the framerate to 23.976, and added the DTS-X track. Audio offset is 23921ms from a long german company header. In getting the timing, it was interesting using screencaps that there did seem to be more detailed when zooming. Apologies for the link but I can never get that stuff working in the forum. But I've loaded the two shots to me drive. I know HDR etc whatever, I don';t have a HDR computer, so just a plain old lossy screengrab from the software player https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wPs...ew?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/1SGl...ew?usp=sharing |

I'm not entirely sure (haven't watched it yet, and too hard to check on my PC as too slow for 4k) but in prepped a forced sub srt for this for it for my 23.976 DTS-X remux. So you could use that and change the frame rate to work on the 24p. I can send link if of use.

Hmm, I'm having second thoughts on Olympus UHD also. There is definitely more image detail in it. And some of those CG shots like that Washington monument plane crash look better, no banding, and the distant office buildings way more detail like can see windows. Hard getting screenshots where I have color right though. So in SM player the screenshots look messed up color space wise but MPC they are right but black wrong. I need to try on the projector again.
