"Show Me Your Face" by Lee Tai-hsiang, who I believe also did the cue used for the opening theme to Magnificent Butcher, though I'm blanking on the name of that cue.

OldPangYau, seeing as how Criterion have the rights for this (and many other early Jackie Chan titles), do you think that they will release this on disc?

So, they currently have *streaming* rights, which is a different beast from, say, the film showing up on the Janus Films website. Criterion tends to stream a lot of films that they may not have the physical rights to, such as Taxi Driver. They've also had the newer 2K restoration of Last Hurrah For Chivalry for over a year on the Criterion Channel, with no hint of a physical release on the horizon.

Going back to Janus Films, if you see a title pop up on that site, there's a *better* chance of said title getting a physical Criterion release... but not confirmed.

After all... the Criterion Channel may be streaming The Fearless Hyena Part II, but I sure don't see that getting a physical Criterion blu-ray release

It's called 'Lift Your Veil' and is an 'adaptation' of a Uyghur folk song. The story goes that this song was sung as part of a game to kill time in the fields. An old man would put on women's clothes and sing and dance before pulling off the headscarf to reveal that he was not actually a woman.
Would have gone very well with a certain scene in Fearless Hyena...

I really hope they are doing the "Dragons Forever" standard to this one. Meaning:

-3 versions in HD (international, hk and taiwanese)
-all versions also english friendly. Hybrid audio where needed
-audio commentary
-loaded with bonuses (bts/trailers/interviews etc)
-booklet with content

How spoiled we are getting...

Not only is there a Taiwanese version, it has footage not in the other versions (all three cuts have exclusive footage in fact).

HKL's is the HK version. I think the Taiwanese version is available on the Japanese BD.

I wish they could all be merged to one cut but I don't think all of the exclusive footage is available in one language (export cut exclusive footage is only in english for example).

I remember seeing some shots of Shih Kien interrogating the Dean-Shekish shop owner, is that scene in the Taiwanese edition?

I would love to see a hybrid edit of all versions with all footage possible included, as long as it makes narrative sense. A “comprehensive” version, like Criterion did with their awesome MR. ARKADIN DVD set.

The Taiwanese cut was never scanned in HD. There’s only an old Taiwanese VHS and they included a rip of that VHS on the Japanese BD as a bonus.

There are minor extensions to fights in that version (roughly 1 min overall) and there are 5.5 minutes of extra dialogue scenes. A lot of the fights are shorter than the HK cut though and overall the Taiwanese cut is 1.5 min shorter than the standard, HK print.

Would make a great bonus on the new release despite not being HD!

There was also a rip of an old tv recordning floating around back in the days, with a yellow VIDI-logo.

I wonder what version will be on the 88Films release as there is 4 different; international/export, HK, Taiwan and japanese.

Can anyone confirm that the japanese and international version have the same dub and score? Is it the same as international version but with the complete end fight?

I just checked the scandinavian collection 3 and the young master is infact the 106 minute version and its looking great! The dub must be the one from the HKL DVD. Assuming 88Films also will have the 106 minute HK cut as main feature I really hope they include the international or japanese version along with the taiwan version as extra. Imagine Jackie's 3 hour cut though. Now thats special...

Its the same dub and score. Bit odd that the japanese cut was shown with an english dub in japanese theatres, was the same with Wheels on meals to.

HK cut +japanese cut +taiwanese would really be something!

Btw, that scandinavian box set, is YM taken from a HD master?

Must be, it looks clear as day. Says Fortune Star 2010, 2016.

I've noticed a lot of the 2k remastered say 2010 and 4k ones say 2018. Have fortune star been sitting on these 2k remasters for 10 years?

Could this be the year they were licensed?

I believe 2010 was when they renewed their licenses after initially obtaining most of them in 2003 and 2004 from Media Asia and others. The second copyright is usually the copyright for the restoration. That said, Shaolin Wooden Men's restoration has a copyright from this year... Makes me wonder what restoration was used on the Scandinavian disc, lol.

I haven’t tried the Scandinavian sets yet but will do eventually for collection sake. Whatever restoration they used I think it’s safe to say they won’t look as good as 88’s. Can’t wait to see how the upcoming Jackie Chan releases look and sound.

I’m not sure about the rights history of the Lo Wei titles, but I was told the following about the others:
  • Golden Harvest assigned rights to Star TV in 1993, but because the latter did not have a distribution arm they used Media Asia as a sales agent until 2002.
  • A licensing division was established by Star TV until 2010.
  • Star TV assigned all rights to Fortune Star Media Limited in 2010.

From memory, Media Asia fought it out in the courts with Alpha Films for the rights to the Lo Wei pictures - Alpha licensed the films to Columbia in the US, and Eastern Heroes in the UK.
