A question mark over next Thursday's edition of Discovering: Film on Sky Arts. It's on an hour earlier compared to this week's new edition (won't find out until this coming Thursday, whether it's a new edition or not).

CrockettandTubbs, you'll be happy about this. Read in the new issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine today that new editions of Discovering: Film resume a week on Thursday. It's either a new series or the continuation of the series which I thought ended a few weeks ago with the Michelle Pfeiffer edition. Have edited the post on the previous page of this thread, the list of episodes from the most recent series (next week's new edition is about Mel Gibson).

Also airing on Sky Arts a week on Thursday is a new Discovering: Film special, about the sci-fi genre.

I saw the Western special where they listed their top 25 films.

Hopefully the sci-fi special is the same (90 minutes).

Tonight's new edition of Discovering: Film about Mel Gibson was very good. But as I suspected, the Mad Max films weren't featured much. The original was featured, but later on I don't think they were mentioned during a look back at Gibson's career. The two sequels were skipped, as were the three Lethal Weapon sequels (although in the programme makers' defence, they don't normally talk about sequels. The one exception I can think of, was French Connection II, in an edition about Gene Hackman).

Air America and Tequila Sunrise were skipped as well, along with one of Gibson's directing efforts The Man Without a Face.

Sky Arts has a concert of Randy Newman's film scores conducted by David Newman (21st June, 10pm) and the same night at 11:40 BBC4 has Churchill and the Movie Mogul, about his friendship with Alexander Korda.

A week on Thursday, the new edition of Discovering: Film will be about actor Sir John Hurt. It doesn't say in the new issue of TV & Satellite Week that it's the season finale (just that it's a new edition).

Enjoying tonight's new edition of Discovering: Film about Sir Richard Attenborough.

Unless a North American label announces a release of Seance on a Wet Afternoon with exclusive extras and a transfer which may end up being better than Network's, eventually I'll get Network's Blu-ray release.

Of what they showed of it, Only Two Can Play (in which Attenborough starred with Peter Sellars) looked very good. Hopefully this is something Studiocanal would announce as part of it's Vintage Classics line. Hadn't heard of this film before, and if I have done it's a vague memory.

Looks like this time it is indeed the last in the current series of Discovering: Film. In the new issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine it doesn't say that a new edition is on Sky Arts a week on Thursday.

Just watched the 'top 25' sci-fi Discovering Film special.

I thought the typeface used was a good indicator that
[Show spoiler]Blade Runner
would be #1, but they (Ian 'flapping hands' Nathan, Neil Norman and Stephen Armstrong) chose
[Show spoiler]Close Encounters
.

[Show spoiler]2001
was 3rd.

All 'top...' lists are subjective, but in my top 10 would be
[Show spoiler]The Thing, Blade Runner and Aliens

CrockettandTubbs, it's a good job you posted about the second edition of the new series of Discovering: Film being about Kevin Costner. Usually in the new issue of TV & Satellite Week magazine it tells you who the new edition is about. But all it says for a week on Thursday is the name of the show, followed by 'New edition'.

Episode 3:

Glenn Close

(I wait until Friday morning and spin forward days on Virgin - the new episode should be up by then).

Would be an excellent programme except for one of the presenters.... Ian Nathan. This bloke cannot talk without flailing his arms about. He'd be snookered if his hands were tied, I kid you not.

Somebody tell him for cryin' out loud.
