I know calibration would fix these, but due to panel issues, I have not yet had a calibration performed. I would say the raised blacks aren't really an issue in most cases unless the content is somewhat bit-rate starved or poorly compressed. Either way, it is a significant improvement to the FALD TVs I had which had to crush shadow detail or highlights in order to reduce blooming.
From what I've been hearing, raised blacks has been an issue on some of this year's LG OLED panels, particularly the OLED C10. Previous year OLED had a problem with crushed blacks and some poor shadow detail.

I've been hearing that some LED's like Samsung QLEDs and TCL crushes blacks, that's not good.

Regarding that crushing blacks the Samsung 4K 65 inch Q60A also with certain models of the Q60A it has white dots which is apparently a known issue. But I haven’t seen it on my TV. I would recommend to take a look at It but stay away from TLC OLED. Also don’t look at those ULED QLED from Hisense because they lack brightness the nit is around like 300 to 350. Plus they have atsc 3.0.

My situation is:

I have a 50 inch 4k Panasonic TV. It's nice but I sit a little under 8 feet away from it, and I find I'm not getting the most out of 1080p and 4k stuff at that distance. I mainly watch movies (say 5 a week) and watch about 3 sports matches a week too. I watch an hour of news a day. It just feels too small.

I have the green light to spend around £1500 on a new TV. At a push (and I mean a real push) I could go up to £1999. And hope the wife never finds out. I have young children that will probably watch an hour or two of youtube a day. I cannot babysit this TV 24 hours a day.

I feel the jump to 55 inch is too small a gain. I'd prefer a 65 inch but that's then an extra £400 or so.

So :

-Is an OLED too risky given this situation? (burn in and damage etc)
-Should I risk it and get it from somewhere like John Lewis with extra damage protection?
-Will the Black Friday deals in November see a 65inch LG or equivalent enter my budget range?
-Should I be looking at QLED ? Is that the right gear for my situation, or will I regret not getting an OLED when I had the chance?

Thank you for any replies.
How much is £1999 in U.S dollars? Going from a 50" to a 55" screen you're not going to see any difference, since it's only 5" bigger. OLED TVs are more expensive, and sometimes you have to get what you can afford and not put yourself into a financial bind. Whichever TV you choose to buy, I highly recommend to buy an extended warranty with it. I've got burned once when the panel went bad and regretted not getting the extended warranty, so I had to buy a new tv.

Thanks, I did just that and got an extended warranty on a 65 inch LG OLED . It's been ok so far even though panel uniformity is slightly off (I can see tiny little purple patches in black and white films). But it is a great TV.

That's great, and good luck on your new tv. You're going to enjoy it.
