It's almost like Lynch's dislike of 5.1. I don't know if he still feels that way, but I remember it was a bugger of a time finding an import of I think it was 'LOST HIGHWAY' in 5.1. And, just another sort-of related trivia, since Lynch NEVER does or allows commentaries, there was one rare instance where I believe it was the highly regarded Tim Lucas had done one for one of Lynch's films, either LH or maybe 'MULHOLLAND DRIVE', I don't remember, for a non-US Blu-ray I think, and when Lynch heard of it he stopped it being included in the Blu-ray, but Tim Lucas, since he was already paid for it and had done it, kindly made it available for download.

I played the bluray disc on my PS3 and holy cow was the disc loud while it was running. We ended up switching it to my PS4 where it played much quieter, but I could still hear a slight hum during the flick. Has anyone else experienced issues with the disc running loudly?

Rented from Redbox. Bummed the bonus features are on a seperate disc since they only amount to an hour, but that seems to be the norm for Nolan films.
For what it's worth, I watched it with just TV speakers, and never had an issue with dialogue. Had to lower the volume at a few music cues though. |

I wish that these movies that have switching aspect ratios would also include one with the standard scope ratio too. I have a scope screen and it sure makes it a PITA.

I would describe it as aggressive. I don’t think I have any other discs that have such loud surround channels. The dialogue is certainly a bit low in the mix but not awful all the time. The problem is during some dialogue scenes the music/effects are so loud in the rear channels that on my setup it starts to drown out the center channel.
I didn’t see this in a theater so I can’t compare but I totally get the complaints of muffled dialogue. |

I'm entirely aware this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it seems every Nolan movie sticks to scope on the digital versions. So the option is there.

My 5.1 setup on the sound did have the drowning out issue that made it hard to hear some of the dialogue. Not impossible (except when Neil is getting the tour of the Freeport which seems to be completely intentional), but a bit difficult.
I do think it was Nolan doing something on purpose. It may have been him saying that the specific details of the heist don't matter ahead of time, just the actual flow of the action as it happens. It's the best interpretation for the choice I can come up with. I don't know if the idea works, though. |
