Not arguing with you there. They just spend money like there's an unlimited amount of it and we end of paying for it.

Same, it baffles me that people think they need to keep everything active at the same time all the time.

Though I do keep Netflix active all the time, I usually end up not using as as much as I think, but I'm behind on so much stuff that when I find free time then it's there waiting for when I can watch something... $18 is getting steep though, I might have to start being more mindful about just letting it go unused but still paying for it.

I only really watch Shudder and Full Moon Streaming consistently. I also have Netflix and HBO Max, but I only watch original content on Netflix like once every two months and on HBO Max the film selection is better but I only really watch Impractical Jokers every day and a movie on there once in a while. Just got Shudder this week but I've been using it every day.

The Netflix all-you-can-consume-for-$10 model was never economically viable to begin with and is currently holding close to $15 billion in debt.

It's a predatory business model whose global growth is the only thing keeping investors and creditors at bay but my guess it will, at some point, implode with so much streaming competition.

We'll probably see the monthly rates continue to go up and/or we'll start to see ads to generate additional revenue.

Honestly, I think a limited-ad option would make a lot of sense for them. Charge half the price and throw in a 30 second commercial every 10-15 minutes, and then would end up making A LOT more per customer on the advertising revenue...

What some people don't realize is Netflix is now a GLOBAL company. They are seen in many countries. Gone are the days when they were just a U.S. company.

Part of being seen in other countries is they insist you MUST have up to 30% of their "native" content. Watch in India, Bollywood movies. U.K. you get the Beckhams. A lot of areas are insisting that Netflix carries content for their audience as opposed to "cultural infestation" from the West (lack of a smaller. better term). This is one of the reasons Netflix HAS to spend more on content.

Keep in mind, they OWN no content. Even the "Netflix originals" ownership is retained by the production companies and Netflix is simply the distributor.
Stranger Things is owned by 21 Laps Entertainment. Same prod co. responsible for Last Man Standing, Arrival, and the Night At The Museum series of movies.

I remember 5 years ago before I went digital, people always kept telling me, "You gotta sign up for Netflix, man! It's only 8 bucks a month!" Fast forward five years later, we're now paying $18 per month. Can you see now why I find these rate increases annoying? Yeah, prices go up, but the rate at which they are increasing is ridiculous. The way it's going, we'll be paying $50 per month for Netflix in no time.

The entry level plan is still $9

True, but who on this forum is going to pay for 480/SD streams on a single device? In my mind that tier doesn't even exist :P

This seems to be the modern business model where a big company with deep pockets can afford to lose vast amounts of money and accrue massive debt. As long as they are dominating the market share and keeping their shareholders happy no one seems to question it. The end-goal is to wipe-out the competition and then raise prices to finally post a profit.

It's no different than the Uber model trying to eliminate the world taxi cab business while being an unprofitable business.

Because they have more time than money.

Yeah, but the picture quality must look fugly! I would hate to think how hideous the picture quality must be on a big screen TV!

Maybe they watch it on their laptops or other portable devices? Maybe that's enough for them as a casual expenditure? There's tons of variables.

Could do like Hulu's no ad version, but instead of having "some shows" with ads before and after, just have it after each episode, or after a few you've watched in a row. I'd be fine with 1 or 2 15-30 second ads before and after each episode (that you can't skip at the end) instead of during.

Yeah, 18 isn't even that bad at all honestly for people that actually watch it a decent amount. I personally shift different services depending how I feel that month. There's so much great content but it's all spread out across all the services so that works nicely for me.

There's plenty of people here that drop $50-100 on special editions of a single movie, i'm sure people that pay for Netflix thinks that's absolutely insane.

The $9 plan is def. more then enough for a huge amount of people though. More and more people are watching content on there phones and tablets plus a lot of people just simply don't care much about watching in the highest quality possible. Saying that, no way in hell I could handle it now that i'm used to 4k on a big screen but I think the audience for it is def. out there. I've also lived in a few remote places and people there even today don't always have great internet so hd and especially 4k quality streaming is not a reality and most aren't building 4k movie physical libraries either.

Nearly everyone I know doesn't understand why I bought an overpriced OLED when I could have gotten a "great" tv for a fraction of the cost. Same thing with the money I spend on vinyl and my audio equipment.

Just me personally, I don't see how anyone could happily pay for any streaming service consistently and actually watch content they enjoy regularly but that's just me. I love the current situation where we have so many choices in an age where the Television/episode formula is delivering more consistent high quality content then movies do imo. There's also more trash programming then ever but that comes along with more content overall.

To be able to sprinkle that all in with my physical releases leaves me with plenty to watch year round.

$18 a month is probably a deal breaker for me. I don't watch it often or binge watch shows. I will pay with gift card if I ever have an interest in streaming newer stuff. I will just keep Amazon Prime for streaming and enjoy my iTunes/Vudu movie collection. Netflix should be like $12 a month imo, so I am out. They will keep raising the price to because they have to pay for all their productions.

LOL though at anyone who thinks Netflix is good enough to part with a physical media collection. It's not and won't ever be.

Movie theater ticket prices go up every year. Netflix raises their price by a dollar or two and everyone goes crazy.
