With Kino releasing The Underneath, I think it’s safe to say that the Criterion release of King of the Hill isn’t coming back into print unless it’s reauthored. A shame as I hadn’t picked it up before the prices soared.

I don't think Kino's release of The Underneath necessarily has any impact on King of the Hill. The Underneath is included a bonus feature there, and isn't listed on the spine or cover art or anything, it's only mentioned in the fine print.

It's entirely possible KL's license for The Underneath isn't exclusive and doesn't negate Criterion's old license to include it as a bonus feature.

Didn't realize Kino was releasing 'The Underneath' nor that 'King of the Hill' is OOP.

King of the Hill is marked as "Currently Unavailable" at Criterion, it's not listed as "Out of Print."

https://www.criterion.com/films/27965-king-of-the-hill

Currently Unavailable means out of stock, as opposed to out of print.

When a title is OOP, Criterion says so:

https://www.criterion.com/films/236-the-third-man

King of the Hill was released during that unfortunate period of about a year when Criterion experimented with making all their releases dual-format BD/DVD combo sets, in cardboard digipacks with slipcases.

As each of those has sold out their first printing, they've reprinted them as solo BDs. This means they have to redesign the packaging, etc, so it's not as simple as repressing more stock. I'm sure the pandemic is what's holding up a repressing of King of the Hill. If it were OOP, Criterion would note it that way.

FYI, the French UHD is out, and includes a BD.

It's being discussed here, and it sounds like both discs are mercifully free of forced French subs.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...t=limey&page=5

Based on comparison caps at caps-a-holic, the French also appears not to have desaturated colors of the UK BD, which seemed to be a technical error:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...=325936&page=4

I'm waiting on more definitive opinions regarding the UHD, but it sounds promising.

As we get closer to the possible release, I don't think there's been any new news about the box set. Yet.

FYI - King of the Hill is available again:

https://www.criterion.com/films/27965-king-of-the-hill

As predicted, it looks like a new BD-only edition came out on June 29, hopefully in a plastic case this time.

It is the exact same disc as before, including The Underneath.

Mr. Kneff, the reworked version of Kafka, just premiered at TIFF:

Hopefully the promised boxset will materialize soon.

Man, that sounds.... bad? Removed all the dialogue and replaced it with subtitles? I hope if he releases his box set that at least the original cut is included.

Back when he announced the boxset a year or two ago, he said it would have both cuts.

It wold not be inappropriate to include a list of Soderbergh's smart-phone films that are
available only as downloads. No Sudden Move for example. The most authentic neo-noir
I've seen in awhile.

Hmm... I think Unsane and High Flying Bird were the only films he shot on an iPhone. His other digital films have been shot conventionally, mostly on various Red cameras, he's a big fan of them and usually gets the latest technology that hasn't been commercially released yet.

None of his streaming films are available for download, unfortunately. They can only be viewed on the various streaming platforms, with current membership.

HIGH FLYING BIRD - Netflix
THE LAUNDROMAT - Netflix
LET THEM ALL TALK - HBO Max
NO SUDDEN MOVE - HBO Max

I've loved all of them, but none of them have had any physical media release, nor are any of them likely ever to have one, sadly.

I'll add a list of them at the bottom of the OP though.

I did a search. More information has come out about Soderbergh's methods
on NO SUDDEN MOVE. He shot it on the RED Monstro 8K with a modified
sensor using anamorphic Kowa lenses. Interesting report that didn't come
up in a previous search:

NO SUDDEN MOVE's LUSH LOOK

And a fish eye on like 95% of the movie.

A 40mm Kowa anamorphic lens isn't a fisheye.

“We were shooting on the RED Monstro sensor with very intense anamorphics. The lens coverage on the sensor was not entirely designed to cover the widest edges of the frame, there was very intense distortion at the far right and left edges of the frame and the initial framing had that cropped out. But when Steven saw how the optics were interacting with the image, he loved it, and was like, ‘Oh, I want to include that.’ So we actually widened out the image masking, and included those side parts, where there was very intense lens distortion. You got these really wild effects as the camera pans around bending the picture.

I'm hoping Kafta will also get released in its original form. It took me years to track it down and a was very disappointed with it but I would love to re-visit the film.

I finally ordered the Criterion King of the Hill as it is another Soderberg film I wish to re-visit. I will most definitely order the box set of some of this work as some of them are amongst my favourite of his.

New email from Extension 765 points to more engagement on the site from Soderbergh but no specific mention of the boxset.

Mr/Dr Soderbergh, on advice from his dentist, will be posting more often and offering new swag and one-of-a-kind items.

He used to have a page on the website where he sold props and promotional items from his films that he had lying around his house, for charity. Sounds like he might start doing that again.
