I heard they are borrowing The Green Tint (TM) from the Fellowship EE BD, lulz.

I wonder if the film just happened to never go into HDR? Like a blade runner 2049 situation? I highly doubt it though.

I'm not an expert, but I guess that if the color grading was done right this time around, the 4K would be a big improvement over the previous BDs even without HDR. Right?

Even with this new information, I'll still be buying this on day one. For me, who owns the 2014 remastered release inside of the Man With No Name set, the extras, multiple cuts (even though I'm used to the Extended anyways), and the resolution bump make this all well worth it for me, HDR or not. There's a lot more information in Kino's Mad Max 4K thanks to the increased resolution and better compression. I'm excited to see how The Good, The Bad and the Ugly looks!

Unfortunately, the one I settled on, a reconstruction of the Italian cut with English audio, was only briefly available; I’d just happened to have stumbled upon it at the right time

It depends on whether one prefers the extended cut, which is the film’s equivalent of the Star Wars special editions.

There's already a 4K for this on iTunes, is it going to be the same transfer?

Two things:

1) I suggested to Kino that a standalone release of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in 4K would make a nice compromise.

2) I just purchased the Kino special edition Blu-ray of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly a week or two ago.

You're all welcome.

If you have a competent colorist then it's not that hard to work with a botched master:

Kino use to master their discs at a low gamma. Thankfully, they appeared to of stopped doing this practice not long after their "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" disc.

A stronger encode could help. The Kino disc (both cuts) are complete arse and the MGM is decent but it could be "tighter".

I've re-graded the entire MGM disc shot by shot, and even so, there are some that are so damaged by blown highlights that original detail couldn't be pulled back in. The final shot of the film is one huge instance. And if blacks crush out detail completely, then you can't get that back. So it IS hard to work with a botched master in some cases.

No theatrical cut, no HDR, no sale.
I don't want to watch the terrible extended cut ever again.

Yes, but 10-bit encoding on the UHD vs. 8-bit for Blu-ray, so the color is still improved a bit.

Lots of European UHDs also lack HDR. Another U.S. title that lacks HDR is Terrence Malick's SONG TO SONG.

Dog Soldiers hasn’t got HDR either but that is miles better than the included Blu-ray.
