When I watch the movie. I have stuff in my backlog that is still shrink wrapped after buying it more than 5 years ago. I do sometimes open a packaging earlier when I notice there is a loose disc inside.

With a collection of 2233 titles (latest count excluding the backlog) I have never really had an experience with wrong discs or damaged discs. Because of that the risk seems very small to me and not really worth the effort of opening the shrinkwrap. And it should help keep the discs and cases in better condition for a longer period of time.

Same. I've never encountered missing/wrong/broken discs either (and if it happens some day, I'll deal with it), so I'm not worried about keeping mine wrapped.

I bag mine after I've opened them too. I find it easier to clean off dust when they are in plastic. I hate dust.

My opening ritual:

- Remove any stickers from slipcover.
- Massage the shrink wrap around the edges of the case to loosen it.
- Slit the top, slide the case out, and remove the top title sticker.
- Open the case, inspect the discs, and remove any security stickers.
- Redeem digital code.

When does this take place? I used to open everything immediately. But, I've never had a problem with missing or damaged discs. Now I wait, so if I decide to sell it off, I can list it as new, for maximum value. I open most things when I watch them. The exceptions are: Floaters (to check for scratches), to redeem a digital code, or to switch Arrow / SF cover art to the original.

Right away. But say I buy at Best Buy or another brick and mortar store, as soon as I get in the car. I dont leave the parking lot until I check them. If there’s something wrong, right back into the store. Shrink wrap in the outside trash can. Plus if there’s something wrong with them when I get home, I’m a lazy bastard and don’t want to drive back.

Usually, when I watch the movie. I still have two from last month's Criterion sale that I haven't opened.

Wanting to reduce exposure is why I would never buy a cabinet without doors.
