Ah, good. One day in and we've already gotten to "a certain poster derails the thread by repeatedly questioning the rules even though he's not going to bother voting for anything the rest of us have ever heard of". I was afraid I'd miss it...

I agree, we were just hoping to move the deadline for watching the 2020 films and making our lists. At least, that’s what I was referring to.

Minari also had a limited US release virtually similar to Nomadland. That is listed on IMDB as a Limited US release. So that DOES count? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1063345..._=nv_sr_srsg_0 Quote:

![]() My Top 25 Films Of 2020
01) Wolfwalkers ![]() Absolutely gorgeous 2D animation, stunning visuals, a captivating story with emotional weight & terrific voice work. Soul will probably receive all the plaudits come awards season but in my opinion it should be this. A work of art. 02) Mangrove ![]() A gripping drama based on a true story that excels in both creating a time & place in British history & as a courtroom drama in the second half. The storytelling & performances are both really strong here. I loved it. 03) The Painted Bird ![]() Beautiful B/W cinematography peppered with apalling scenes of violence, it is both bleak yet beautiful. With minimal dialogue & an amazing central performance by the young boy, i was captivated throughout the near 3 hour runtime. 04) Nomadland ![]() Much like Chloé Zhao's excellent 2017 movie The Rider, it is the sheer beauty & minimalism that i love about both these movies. I found this to be so relaxing & hypnotic to watch, i could of spent another hour travelling on this journey with Francis McDormand's character. Wonderful movie. 05) Sorry We Missed You ![]() Ken Loach excels at these real life social dramas that have the ability to make you angry whilst watching & this one is no different. As someone who lives in the north of england where the movie is set, i can relate to all these characters & the situations they go through. Any movie that can stir up the emotions like this gets high praise from me. 06) Promising Young Woman ![]() I thought this was a terrific revenge story. There was something about the dark & serious subject matter juxtaposed with the bright candy coloured pallete that really stood out to me. Carey Mulligan's central performance was a highlight as was the script & the soundtrack. 07) Calm With Horses ![]() A gritty low key crime drama about small time gangsters set somewhere in Ireland. It's an interesting character study & a morality tale with great performances throughout. Renamed as Shadow Of Violence for it's US release. 08) Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets ![]() I love documentaries that drop you into a strange place & then just leave you to watch real life unfold. At least that's what i thought i was watching until reading up about it afterwards. But that is the strength of it...it's sad, it's funny & it feels very real. 09) Lovers Rock ![]() An amazingly immersive experience, i would of loved to see this on the big screen. The continuously moving camera puts you right into the middle of the party & makes you feel like you are there. And what a stonking soundtrack! 10) Soul ![]() Pixar doing what Pixar does...wonderful in all departments that will appeal to both children & adults. Nothing more to add really. 11) The Wolf House ![]() A very dark & creepy fairytale, this a wondrous piece of stop motion animation from Chile. It may not have the shine or polish of Wolfwalkers or Soul but it more than makes up for that with imagination & creativeness. 12) Deerskin ![]() What started out as a fairly mundane film proceded to get stranger & stranger. The more absurd it got, the more i began to enjoy it to the point it has ended up as one of my biggest surprises of the year. Highly recommended to those seeking something a bit different. 13) The Forty-Year-Old Version ![]() I really enjoyed this uplifting tale of a struggling playwright artist entering her 40's who re-invents herself as a rapper. An excellent cast of characters & great B/W photography of New York. 14) Let Him Go ![]() Great performances abound this modern gothic western that is beautiful to look at & emotionally quite powerful. 15) First Cow ![]() Slow paced & beautiful to look at, the fantastic cinematography & overall mood really makes you feel like you are watching 1820's Oregon. 16) Da 5 Bloods ![]() I'm a fan of treasure hunt movies & men on a mission type war movies so this one ticked all the right boxes for me. A little bit messy & all over the place but i can overlook those things as i enjoyed it a lot. 17) The Devil All The Time ![]() A great slow burn southern gothic crime thriller covering multiple decades full of bizarre but memorable characters. A mean & sombre movie. 18) Another Round ![]() A dramedy about alcohol & how it can be used to improve ones life...or is it criticizing an alcohol culture? Either way it is great. 19) Sound Of Metal ![]() Riz Ahmed gives a great performance in this story of a drummer losing his hearing but it is the sound design that truly stands out. 20) Minari ![]() A deeply moving & engaging movie with great performances especially the grandmother. A funny yet sad low-key gem. 21) Run ![]() I'm a sucker for Hitchcockian type thrillers & i thought the makers did an excellent job here. It was tense when it needed to be & i was engaged throughout which is all i want in these type of movies. 22) The Wolf Of Snow Hollow ![]() I love snowy small town settings in movies...this one involves a series of gruesome murders & the possibility of a werewolf on the loose. I can see why some people might not like Jim Cummings brand of acting & comedy but i do. 23) Palm Springs ![]() Palm Springs takes on the well worn time-loop movie formula but still manages to make it feel fresh & entertaining. For me it hits all the right notes. 24) The Kid Detective ![]() A small town murder mystery story that i found both funny & engaging but then turns quite dark. Quirky neo-noir goodness with an interesting tone to it. 25) Beats ![]() Another great film that captures a place & time in British history, this time the early 90's rave culture. Good performances throughout with a striking monochrome look. |

Thanks as always to werepuppy for doing this. Please let me know if any of these are ineligible (it's been a weird year).
Work-in-Progress til due date: 1. Let Him Go Pulpy material given unexpected gravitas thanks to Diane Lane's central performance and fine supporting work from Costner, Manville, and Donovan. The best neo-Western since Hell or High Water, with some of the most tension-filled cinematic moments in years. 2. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm Borat is one of the five greatest comedies ever made. This unexpected sequel doesn't ascend to those heights, but it's worthy enough. I hope this isn't the last time we ever see Borat, but if the results are this strong, I'm fine with waiting another 14 years. 3. 7500 One of the best thrillers I can recall in the last few years, with a central "gimmick" that you may not even notice until the whole thing's over. And it was nice to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt back in movies this year. 4. Bad Education 5. Greyhound A white-knuckle, in-the-moment sea thriller the likes of which we haven't seen since at least Black Sea, and perhaps the best wartime actioner since The Hurt Locker. Movies in which Tom Hanks plays a boat captain are a resounding two-for-two. 6. The Gentlemen Guy Ritchie doesn't miss. Probably the most purely entertaining movie of 2020. 7. The Trial of the Chicago 7 8. His House An unexpected horror gem from Netflix. The less you know ahead of time, the better. 9. Possessor As exciting a directorial debut as I can recall of late. 10. Promising Young Woman 11. Tenet Nolan has undoubtedly made better movies than Tenet, but I don't think he's made a movie as entertaining as Tenet. It's a legitimately fun ride with huge set pieces, exotic locales captured stunningly in IMAX, and a pair of charming lead performances from Washington and Pattinson. Potentially frustrating upon first viewing, subsequent visits should liven up considerably. 12. Extraction Possibly the best pure action movie since the first John Wick. 13. Mank I liked Mank. I just wish I liked it as much as I wanted to. And here's hoping that, as I inevitably revisit Mank over time, I end up liking it as much as I wanted to. 14. i'm thinking of ending things 15. Athlete A 16. Palm Springs 17. The Social Dilemma 18. Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb 19. The Mystery of DB Cooper 20. The Call of the Wild A surprisingly good movie with a lot of heart. Beautifully lensed by Janusz Kaminski and wonderfully scored by John Powell, with a strong performance by Harrison Ford and VFX that, while not always seamless, are more than good enough to sell the illusion for 100 minutes. 21. Wonder Woman 1984 A charmingly throwback superhero flick. Not as good as the first one, but not nearly as poor as its reputation suggests. 22. Underwater We didn't get Godzilla vs. Kong in 2020, but this monster movie was a surprisingly decent consolation prize. 23. Wasp Network 24. Birds of Prey 25. The Invisible Man Last edited by imsounoriginal; 03-27-2021 at 08:44 PM. |
