Lo Wei hated the film so much he shelved it for 2-3 years until Jackie's popularity was such that he couldn't afford not to release it.

I disliked those Lo Wei movies when I saw them for the first time, now after having to sit through such "masterpieces" as Kung Fu Yoga, Bleeding Steel, Vanguard, and a few more I tend to find all those early efforts from Jackie as a solid foundation on which his success has been built. Yes, Half a loaf of kung fu is silly, full of cringy dialogue and the same formula seen in many other films from the same period, but this is Jackie trying to break the mold of Lo Wei and going for his unique style, which will set him apart from the rest for many years to come. It might not be in the same league as Project A or Police Story, but it has its special place in Jackie's filmography and I consider it as sort of a rite of passage or coming of age story for him when all the rest were going in the same direction (with few exceptions) still searching for the new Bruce Lee on screen.

The JC-LW films have, historically, got a bad rap; this is partly attributed to the poor presentations (both for the film itself and the artwork). I'd say it's a different story now, so my advice to doubters is to give them another try because you may well be surprised (and if you still feel the same after, fair enough!

I'd take any of Jackie's early films over his recent CCP approved movies.

If it has the same decent extras that most 88 releases have had over the last couple of years, then I'll pick it up. But I'm not pulling the trigger on a pre-order until they've been announced as it is pretty awful. Mind you, it's NOT Jackie's worst (nor Lo Wei's worst, for that matter), and I've only seen the pan & scan dubbed version from one of those el cheapo big carboard box multiple film VHS releases that newsagents, off-licences and corner shops used to sell. So, who knows, maybe in its original aspect ratio and subtitled it'll be a bit of a revelation(*).
(* - yeah, right. Who am I kidding?!?!?!!? ![]() |

I... I may hold off on this one. I don't have very memorable things to remember., probably last saw it 20 years ago or so. Even contextually, in the mind of history, I struggle w/ the idea of appreciating this one too.
Ugh. I dunno. Hahaha. |

Looks like a total goof-fest, and the first real dose of Jackie’s new kung fu comedy persona, so I’m totally down for that. As Chen Lung has previously stated, I’m finding that all of Jackie’s Lo Wei-produced films have been quite underrated across the board, and I expect the same to be true with HALF A LOAF OF KUNG FU. Looking forward to watching it for the first time!

And that one he did with Chuck Norris that was supposed to be another Bruce Lee flick. Yellow Tiger? Admittedly I've only seen the shorter English dub version, but I can't imagine the original Hong Kong cut is any better. Also, from memory, Fearless Hyena 2, but I've not seen that for about 30 years. I'm not saying Half A Loaf is brilliant, rather it's less shite than some of their others. |

That Chuck Norris Flick your talking about is Yellow Faced Tiger and co-star Wang Tao not Jackie Chan and yes it is an awful movie.
Half a Loaf is OK in parts, not seen for years, but nothing like Fearless Hyena which is far superior in every way. |
