I know somebody who had a $300 late charge for not returning a movie. The guy never paid it either.

That sort of stupid shit, as well as just not wanting to bother with the effort of returning discs, was what drove me to completely stop renting in the mid 2000s.

Funny, since the orig derives from a Captain Kirk mask! (and in the right ilght, it is pretty obvious, I remember people talking about it in the theater the 2nd time I saw the first movie.)

Shatner's face changed a lot in the years right after the series ended, as did his 'hair' (my mother was convinced that instead of just a bad choice of toup, he had gotten a hair transplant from his crotch!) so I'm thinking his Halloween mask must have been based on Shatner circa 1975 or so, around the time of COLUMBO, where I didn't even recognize him till he spoke. I've always figured it was bad plastic surgery, but I do also remember hearing he got his ass kicked in a street fight during the 70s (tried the karate out to no good effect), so I suppose it could have been reconstruction. Either that or using Ivory soap for years had a cumulative destructive effect.

As a schoolboy, renting Witness as it starred Indiana Jones/Han Solo was a bad idea.

Also Evil Dead 2 in the belief that it’d be some dark and intense experience like Dawn of the Dead or Demons.

And A Fish Called Wanda, because it’s shit.

I still remember to this day my best friend at school bringing in his VHS copy of Evil Dead 2 and showing me the artwork on the cover. There's something about the artwork on horror films back in the day, that was just so cool and exciting.

I'm still renting regularly from the redbox kiosk. DVD from Netflix, too, although that's more a subscription than a per-item transaction.

I regret renting the old Playboy videos back in the day.

Back in 1995, my 12 year old self managed to rent a copy of pulp fiction. I'm watching it sometime around midnight when my sleeping mother wakes up. She comes in right at the Ving Rhames rape scene. Needless to say she ejected that movie immediately. I didn't get to finish the movie until several years later.

The worst thing I ever rented was an Anime from Netflic on DVD that was filled with child tentacle rape. I destroyed the disc before sending it back so it could never be played again.

Yeah, we know what you mean, you could always use the $ for the S if you want to, though it's absolutely asinine that this site censors actual clinical terms.

But with the late Bill Paxton as its lead, this film was an utter bore. As a sci-fi futuristic story, there was nothing there to live up to its misleading advertising. I don't think I even finished the film, and I've never seen it since, I think it faded off into the deep recesses of the film archives. I don't remember the exact year, but want to say that was mid to late 80s.
That came out in 1989 and it must have caught me in the right mood because I kind of liked it. It had a great cast, I think Ben Kingsley and F. Murray Abraham were in it too.

I stood my ground with Rogers Video once (they were a Canadian rental chain with the same corporate mentality as Blockbuster) when they kept claiming I hadn't returned a copy of Batman Begins when I was absolutely adamant that I had and I complained like hell to the manager that it was their fault for failing to scan it in when I returned it until they finally relented and wrote off the late fee. Then about a week later I found it under the passenger seat of my car. Oops.

During my own days as a video store clerk I remember a mom came in to complain that we had rented Brain Candy to her kid because she walked in just as the scene came on where a dad's kids walked in on him masturbating to gay porn.

You paid? No way would I have paid. I'd have told them to kiss my pasty white ass.

Admit it. That whole paragraph was merely an excuse for you to brag that you dated someone who looked like Greta Scacchi.

Most people would class those as rental success stories.

Damn straight it was! (actually, I do a lot of free associating when posting, which explains these page-sized digressions, especially if I'm supposed to be doing something else at the time.)

It was a bad relationship, but I did think of her again briefly when I came across a listing indicating THE COCA COLA KID was streaming, and it wasn't on account of Eric Roberts.

I remember a review of the time saying that it was the carcass of Python covered in a transatlantic gloss.

That and my opinion seemed against the grain at the time, but humour is subjective and that’s my opinion.

I also recall Cleese’s Clockwise being popular but again I found it unfunny at the time.

Bully for them. But to schoolboy me they were disappointments.

Schoolboy was the key word in my original post. My top films now would have bored me as a kid.

I wouldn't bother either if I had to go somewhere to return my movie. Netflix makes it so easy. I have an outgoing mailbox in my apartment building lobby.

Kuffs - worst (and best). My friends and I rented this VHS back in the day no less than three times. Somehow we never made it around to seeing it. Even to this day. It’s a great running joke with us.
