Kind of hard to believe that after the director said he didn’t have him in the movie cause there would be to many white people. Yeah 3 is a lot. He’s the last person who should be saying something like that after he changed Mileena’s race and it looks nothing like her. Mileena wasn’t black last time I checked she’s Asian.

Johnny Cage was never the main star on the games or the original movies, and excluding a character purely because of their race, is racism.

Had he said there are lots of characters from the game that weren't included because they didn't fit the story, but hope to include more in the sequel, then fair enough. I wasn't expecting all the original characters to be included anyway, but to exclude them based on race is why I am choosing not to support this movie.

The only thing being quoted is that a white actor would be the hero of the story, which, is, for one, stripped of any real context. Cole Young is supposed to be an expy for the audience. It doesn't go into detail about his role other than that.

And because it only cuts and pastes parts of the interview, there's no source for the full interview. That's terrible journalism. I suggest people find the original interview before assuming what's being reported as true.

Here is the original interview, nothing is taken out of context. He clearly says that the created a new character of Cole Young to serve as the audiences eyes into the world of Mortal Kombat, as he felt weird having a white male as the lead.

Sorry but that is clearly racist, had he said Jax wasn't going to be in the film as he felt weird having a black male as the lead, then the internet would be on fire from the twitter mob demanding his head on a spike.

If that was the first thing that he came out and stated then cool, totally reasonable explanation. Unfortunately that’s not the case. He stated his primary reason for leaving him out was his apprehension around having a white lead which = omission based on race which = racism by its very definition. Imagine if he’d said the same thing about ANY other ethnicity. The film would automatically be canceled/boycotted.

To make matters worse anyone who is familiar with MK knows Johnny Cage isn’t the main character, so why would he need to be the lead in this film? MK has always been an ensemble narrative by it’s very nature with it’s mythology rooted in video games. For argument’s sake let’s say the viewer needs one fighter to experience these events through (a theory I disagree with but obviously this director feels is necessary) then that character should’ve been Liu Kang as he’s the closest thing MK has to a lead.

Exactly. There's countless films with white people in major roles. Not to mention most of the original cast for the Mortal Kombat (MK-MK3U) games were played by caucasians so it's good that they're casting such a diverse cast for this film.

No one is saying that. Like everyone else you are ok with the character being left out cause he is WHITE. Yeah I understand there’s a lot of characters in the movie but to not include Cage cause he is white is bs. Why make a new character that’s not even in any of the games or the other 2 movies? Jax was not an original MK member he showed up in MK2 game. A Cinderella play was recently canceled cause most of the actors was white. The left are the best Ned who are making race an issue in movies and in everything in life. Characters race are being changed just to please people so that BLM doesn’t show up and riot and burn their studios down.

Thanks captain obvious. Nobody is saying that. Cage was part of the original MK lineup, it simply makes sense that he’d be here. If the director has bigger plans for him in a sequel that’s great. He should have lead with that comment and it’d been a non-issue, but he didn’t. He decided to make it about race and virtue signal instead. Now he and the studio can deal with the backlash because common sense people of all ethnic backgrounds are growing tired of the hypocrisy.
