The movie has so much potential to be great. It really needs to be re-cut and extended.

Didn't the Arrow CEO say a couple of years ago that he approached a certain filmmaker about doing a director's cut, but the filmmaker said no? Sounds like Lynch to me. He's always rejected the opportunity because he sees the film as compromised from the get-go. I'd love it if Arrow did their own cut similar to Charles de Lauzirika with his assembly cut of Alien³. Who knows, maybe there's a workprint of Dune in the Universal archives.

Not on film to my knowledge. The extended cut is closer to his vision sans the intro, flipped/repeated shots, and incomplete visual effects. If we get an UHD I’m definitely making a custom cut that even Lynch would appreciate. Also, De Laurentis calls all the shots with Dune. Whether Arrow or Universal release this it will only happen with De Laurentis’ approval and knowing them they’ll include the extended cut even if those scenes are still in 1080.

The Lynch Cut exists on paper, in the form of a script draft that he intended to use as the foundation for his final cut. Due to studio interference, he never had a final cut, according to his own testimony, which is why he has disowned the film entirely and won't speak of it. He was forced by both studios to whittle down and rejigger the film into the theatrical cut, which was too compromised for him to endorse and the extended cut only made it worse, by taking a pile of the excised material and shoving it back in awkwardly, with no massaging or involvement from Lynch, which was the final straw. A recut of Dune could be possible, but there is no intent from the Director to do so and no knowledge about the state of Dune's film assets, beyond the finalized 35mm theatrical cut and whatever the extended cut exists on, so any discussion about is moot unless Lynch and Universal and the surviving DeLaurentis family members come to an agreement, which seems unlikely.

The film certainly has its charms and Lynch adds his characteristic weirdness to it. How Dino thought this was going to become the new “star Wars’ is beyond me. He produced some great films but he was tone deaf about the quality of his film productions. It was about the deal. Last edited by Wtdk; 04-02-2021 at 12:57 AM. |

Frank Herbert was happy with the final script as well. I can’t recall his reaction with the final theatrical cut though but, aside from some changes Lynch added that weren’t in the novel, I seem to remember he was generally pleased.
