Added Ghost Dog, Bruce Lee (Various), Howards End, and Hard Day's Night. Also added both versions of Ran.

Laserdiscs will be added tomorrow or the next day.

In our time away I forgot about all the people who seek threads they don't care about to come complain about their usefulness (or, in their opinion, lack there of). Oh well, to each their own. Glad to be back with all of you!

I'll believe Ran when I see it, that's supposedly been coming here for at least a year, maybe longer. Nothing ever eventuated from any other retailer about it.

Listing LaserDisc releases is pointless, no? Unlike Blu-rays, you can't buy them new, so how many people does that help? The one guy who was planning to buy Akira or Blade Runner on LaserDisc but changed his mind after seeing there are 4K versions? They would have found out anyway and probably still would have purchased the LaserDisc for collectors purposes.

I see your point, but following that principle it would also be useless to list UHD versions of OOP criterion blus, such as Howards End, because you can't get them new (unless it's from an after market seller.) Regardless, the laserdiscs are technically apart of the collection and completionists are going to complete.

I think the part of it is while movies like Citizen Kane, It's a Wonderful Life, North by Northwest, or Singin' in the Rain were released on laserdisc, 20+ years have passed and people don't associate them with Criterion like they would with movies like Ran, Spartacus, Le cercle de rouge, etc.

So, based on what has been posted to date, just a bunch of titles, I'd say it's worthless, because we're comparing apples to oranges.

That said, if it will keep the UHD clown car from rolling through every Criterion threat and/or post and centralize the totality of stupidity in one place, well, that would be genius.

Said Asian studio stated given that they were offered the same 4K restorations as provided to Criterion, mastering in UHD was not worth the significant additional cost due to a negligible difference in appearance and related viewer experience.

Which, given the works in question combined with the director's intent, is a fair point.
Not everyone is a Blu-ray purist. If there's a 4K option available, then some will prefer that over a standard HD picture. Streaming isn't this low-fi thing that people think it was years ago. While it's no where near a disc yet, it's still a better option than just standard HD.

As for the 4K, it may not seem like much, but I think it speaks volumes about how retailers consider 4K releases. It's a shame we probably won't get 4K WKW at this point.

I have everything released from the Criterion 4k Collection. So should you. I like this thread but there's not many must own titles here....yet.

This thread should be limited to titles that are in print or, at the very least, titles that were in print when 4K existed as a format.

It's been on Criterion Channel, and the Criterion commentary retained across formats

Tons of the channel isn't on disc?
