I have been waiting for this one for ages! I first saw this on TV back in 2003 when I was - quite ironically - 8 years old and have loved it ever since! I kept hoping a Blu-Ray would happen for the 10th anniversary back in 2012, but gave up hope a few years later. Still have my DVD copy, but absolutely gonna be buying this!

The new documentary 41m 27s long. I haven't had a chance to watch the doc yet, but looking forward to it. I watched the main feature last night and, aside from a few old FX shots, it looked great!

Just preordered this on Amazon and it's saying it won't ship till around the 28th. May be a shortage on these already like with their House of Wax release that just came out yesterday that's projecting late August if you order now.
Not a long wait, but still worth mentioning. |

I saw this one in the theater with a few friends. We planned to see Goldmember but it was sold out so we went to this instead. We were all pleasantly surprised! It reminded me of Critters which was a childhood favorite of mine.
Will definitely pick up the blu sometime soon. |

![]() ![]() A barrel of toxic chemicals spills into a waterway on the outskirts of a small Arizona town, turning hundreds of spiders into supersized mutants. When the terrified residents take refuge in a mall, only to find that steel doors are no deterrent to the giant arachnids, a returning local, played by David Arquette, the town sheriff, played by Kari Wuhrer, and a boy science enthusiast, played by Scott Terra, must find a way to save the day. The comedic 2002 monster feature, Eight Legged Freaks, directed by Ellory Elkayem, may not quite occupy the same tier as the 1990 hit, Tremors, when it comes to stories about quirky rural types defending their desert towns against sci-fi horror menaces, but viewers on the lookout for fun and engaging Sunday afternoon fare could do far worse. The titular villains, largely created from computer visuals, still look convincing years later, but the sound effects are the main draw, because they give personalities to each different spider species. Arquette and Wuhrer both play their roles surprisingly straight, going against their typical goofy over-the-top cinema archetypes. Doug E. Doug (Cool Runnings) is a joy to watch as the obligatory conspiracy theorist to whom nobody listens until it is too late. Be on the lookout, of course, for Scarlett Johansson in an early part just before she was catapulted into superstardom. My favorite sequence, where the massive spiders go nom nom nom on the townspeople when everyone is desperately trying to escape to the mall, manages to be genuinely gripping while also showcasing a touch of humor. I used to watch Eight Legged Freaks on cable television shortly after its release. I had forgotten how well it works as entertaining comfort food fare. This Scream Factory presentation looks great. I am now enjoying the commentary track. Last edited by The Great Owl; 07-18-2021 at 11:02 PM. |

Also, take note of the scene where characters in a mine shaft smell methane gas.
Methane is actually odorless in and of itself. The smell usually comes from other gases which are almost always added to methane, such as hydrogen sulfide, in order to detect leaks. In many circumstances, however, especially with regard to underground tunnels or underground storage tanks, the odorless methane that is undetected can kill. I deal with this at my environmental job sometimes, and have to take precautions. Always have a buddy if you go into an underground storage tank. Call out frequently to the person who goes into the tank. If the person stops responding, then don’t go in after him or her. Go get help instead. |

I really enjoyed this. For some reason, I completely missed this while it was in theatres, and never sought it out to watch it on DVD or by other means. I'm glad I decided to take the plunge on this as a blind buy.
Side note: I REALLY wish there would be some QC done for some of these recent special features. The volume sometimes needs cranked to understand what some of the cast and crew are saying in these Zoom-style video interviews but then it cuts to a time-padding clip from the movie and it's SO. LOUD. |
