In that case, they probably put both versions on a single UHD. It's not especially long.

The film was framed for a 1.33:1 presentation so it would be a shame to lose the version with the most picture. But I expect both will be available.

Pre-order for the limited edition steelbook opens in 3 days. Not sure what the actual release date is for either the steelbook or the standard editions.

It was not framed for 1.33. It was framed for widescreen but animated in 4:3.

Brilliant, I had a feeling with it being the 35th anniversary of the film this year that this would come out but it's been announced earlier than I thought.

As many others have mentioned I too hope they don't flub the colour space this time. For those who aren't exactly sure what went wrong, they accidentally finished the film at PC limited rather than TV limited colour space.

PC limited is 16-235 RGB meaning the darkest is 16 and the brightest is 235 rather than the full RGB range where 0 is the darkest and 255 is the brightest. TV limited is also 16-235 but it basically stretches it so that 16 and below is seen as black rather than dark grey and 235 and above is seen as white rather than light grey, the conversion was done in the wrong order, causing the greyness.

This was able to be fixed to a degree if you could manually change your screen to PC full colour space but because of all the borked levels the shadows ended up too dark and the highlights too bright. Hopefully since this is HDR this problem should be avoided entirely.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what the 6.5K scan is capable of that they used for the initial release, there's mixed messages whether or not the scan was 4K or 6.5K but 35mm is sometimes scanned at 6.5K so cropping to 4K can be done and keep the pixel ratio 1:1, which is what is believed to have been done when the print they used as it was mentioned in one of the bonus features.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all the laser blasts in HDR, they already looked amazing on the earlier release. I also hope and would assume anyway that we get the same thing as before with a 4:3 version of the film as well as the 1.85:1 version. I prefer the 4:3 version myself as I like to see all the picture available, even though on the odd occasion you see the unpainted edges of characters or see them pop in and out of the frame.

I think it might be safe to say that 4K is here to stay.
Or they’re just pumping this stuff out while they can as physical media withers and dies, but I ain’t complaining! Ohmaigod I can’t believe we’re getting TF the movie on UHD, EEEEEEEEEEEEK!

It was scanned in 6K double flash mode for 4K output on an ARRIscan. Not much more complicated than that. It was also done from an IP rather than the camera negative, but as this is 2D cel animation then resolution isn’t the issue.

On a related subject, I kind of wish that the “full screen” version was actually the home video version (with the Star Wars-like crawl, ending narration and such). I think it would just be neat to preserve that version of the movie too.

In the video on the first post it says the preorders are starting on the 24th rather than it being available then, they said it'll be later in the summer that it'll be available.

The camera negative was destroyed (or otherwise lost), was it not? It's always weird to hear about the negatives to (relatively) recent movies being lost or destroyed.

Given that this is a Transformers thread, would you say that KL is putting out "The Touch" of Evil? (I am so, so sorry.)

I believe that was just in the UK, wasn't it? The US video version was always the US theatrical cut (aside from the word "shit" being muted in early VHS releases).

This announcement came out of no where. I’m sure this will be hard to get for a while so I’m not holding my breath at getting a copy soon.
