So there's actually more footage than the original & that's why the timings wouldn't match?

I've seen the japanese DVD version too from the remastered AnimeIgo release but that quickly made me realise I'm too used to the dub

Yes, most the cut footage from the Japanese shows was added back in, as long as it made sense and didn’t have dialogue. For instance, Minmay’s nude shower scene in the second or third episode. Sometimes shots were extended if they had been trimmed for time in the original broadcast. Stuff like that. The timing is completely different.

If they really cared to, they could probably synch the original mono mix and drop to a mono downmix of the 5.1 audio whenever needed. The original sound effects (and Japanese version's BGMs) are available on the AnimEigo and Australian DVDs of Macross and a lot of the Robotech BGMs are available on CD soundtracks. And worst case scenario, they could keep the out-of-place sound effects intact in those few moments.

That said, I'm not sure how many cuts there are and how frequent they are.

Alternatively, Funimation could make new audio mixes, with the original sound effects. But I assume that the deciding factor is probably whether they want to put that much budget into it.

The necessary materials should probably be available, at least.

That said, the release date is already set, and quite close, and the details say they'll only have 5.1 English audio for the main feature (not even 5.1 Spanish audio, which was a redub afaik, like on (some or all of?) the DVDs), so that ship has sailed, I'm afraid.

I'm glad I mostly just care about the Japanese version nowadays, for which they'll hopefully use cinetape audio (Japanese home video releases AFAIK, and AnimEigo's DVDs) instead of optical film audio (ADV's DVDs).

Someone told me that in either Southern Cross or Mospeada (I forgot which one), there's at least one extended scene, involving nudity, that no longer makes sense with the recorded Robotech dialogue (or perhaps would at least alter characterisation? I haven't seen it myself, so I can't judge).

Sadly Funimation is not handled by the same dedicated fans from 88 Films

Sadly, I'm gonna have to pass on this one since it doesn't include the original stereo mix with the original sound effects. I hate all of the new, completely out-of-place sounding effects that were added to 'enhance' the original mix on the remastered version. They total ruined it, IMO. But that's pretty much par for the course these days.

Just offer multiple cuts, 1 extended with 5.1 and whatever new dubs they want to put in, one original cut with original dub/sound without the botched brightened remastering they did from the japanese grading & then the original japanese cut with japanese audio

Case closed

And I'll just put this AnimEigo trailer here;

Glad I still have my set (minus the lithograph, which I lost ). I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the lineart-style packaging, but I think it's gorgeous. It's just a shame how fragile those single layer discs are. Should really get around to backing up the discs so I never have to risk cracking them again.

Robotech Remastered was HG restoring the episodes (as HG had originally made them) that were cut for time and censorship due to syndication trimming and only footage where no dialogue needed to be recorded and footage where they had recorded the dialogue in the production days but cut the footage was reincorporated into the episodes, with new sound effects and a 5.1 mix.

This release isn’t too exciting to me, but I will definitely be getting the Macross series, DYRL, and Macross Frontier if they are released.

DYRL really deserves a theatrical release, as it represents the pinnacle of hand drawn animation IMO. I think I need to watch it again soon.

No original audio track? Well there goes any and all interest I had for this release.

I can't deal with the new mix sound effects, they are pathetic. This has turned out to be the biggest release disappointment of all time for me. All I guess I can hope for is a later 'apology' remaster like that second DBZ set... oh wait, they still screwed that up anyway.

Maybe it's just best that I hold onto my legacy collection DVD set and just pretend a BD never happened...

Loved watching this series as a kid. I picked up the Macross Saga DVD cheap. Would prefer to watch in 1080p, remastered. Will probably gift the DVD and pick this set up, even if it is the English dub only.

This original Japanese series on BD would have been cool though.

I believe the Macross saga aired in prime time in Japan? And it was a kids show in the west. I remember thinking how cool it was to see a cartoon where people actually died. In fact, when it comes to mortality, it’s more violent then the A-team (the enemies of the A-team always got back up).

I'm gonna give it a chance. Play the first couple of episodes and if I notice any glaring changes I don't like, just return it and be happy with the A&E dvds.

The A&E DVDs would more than likely be the same re-edits/sound-remixes as these (the 2002 "uncut" version of the series), apart from the improved picture and lossless audio the new BDs would boast.

The A&E DVD set was a re-release of the 2004 Robotech Remastered versions released by ADV.

No, Macross had a super poor timeslot on Sunday afternoons at 2pm for the majority of stations (extremely limited areas had prime time slots), which was a big complaint from Ishiguro during the run, so the ratings weren’t good. As VCRs weren’t common and reruns didn’t happen, a lot of viewers missed earlier episodes which is why the recap episode 14 was important.

Despite this, the toys/models/records were extremely profitable and unlike Yamato and Gundam, the series wasn’t cancelled (Yamato should have been 39 episodes vs 26) but actually extended 13 episodes.

Yup, that's what I meant, there (I still have my blue ADV "Protoculture Collection" boxed-set around here somewhere, come to think...).

Are the new sound effects really that terrible? Is it at the level of End of Evangelion's added Slime'd! ("Nickelodeon" style) stock effects? I've never watched Robotech so I'd prefer it to be the best version for my first viewing.

I still have the first DVD sets released for each series, so I don't think I really need to upgrade until something significant comes (at least for Macross). I can take or leave Robotech, honestly

I still remember voting in their poll to help them decide to pick up Macross. If memory serves, it also had Yawara in the poll...
