Starfield probably isn't something Steam Deck users will want to play at the moment. The Steam Deck is one of the coolest pieces of gaming hardware in recent memory as it allows you to take your PC games on the go with you, continuing your progress wherever you are. Of course, it won't be as nice of an experience as playing on a expensive rig, but it's a very competent device that is capable of a lot. Not only can it run games like Red Dead Redemption 2 quite well, but it can also do things like emulation. It's a very freeing device, but it does have its limitations.

Starfield appears to be pretty limited on Steam Deck. Yes, if you already own it on Steam and want to give it a shot, go for it. However, if you only have a Steam Deck, this probably won't be the place to play Starfield at the moment.

I would have bought a replacement if all they added was the OLED display, but it's nice to see they made some additional upgrades as well.

You can get a pretty good deal on a Steam Deck right now, so long as you're ok with an outdated model. Over the last handful of years, we have seen a pretty big increase in interest for portable gaming. Things like the Gameboy, the Nintendo DS, and the PSP/PS Vita were pretty good handheld gaming systems, but in many cases, you were getting a totally different version of the console version of a game. The Nintendo Switch began to change things, but still had compromises such as significantly worse graphics. Other companies saw the possibilities for portable gaming devices at a higher cost, but much better performance. The biggest one thus far has been the Steam Deck, a fairly affordable system that allows you to play your Steam games on the go.

Tried for the limited edition, took 20 minutes to finally get to the purchase confirmation screen and it sold out. Went back for the regular OLED and it won't proceed because...

Guess I'm not getting an OLED Steam Deck any time soon.

Update: After 45 minutes I guess enough people gave up or changed their minds, the store is back to normal and I was able to complete my order.

I missed the shipping notification so I was surprised when UPS delivered this on Saturday. Quicker than I expected, still have to sell the old one. There are already plenty of reviews so no need for me to add my details here, just the verdict that I am happy with the upgrade.

Got mine on the day before Thanksgiving and I've got to say that I love this thing. I never had the LCD model and wasn't even sure I wanted one at all but I made an impulsive purchase when the LE OLED went live and I'm glad I did. Been playing a wide variety of indie, classics, and newer AAA stuff and it's all been great. Not everything in my library i compatible (I have nearly 1000 games) but more than enough works great to keep me occupied for years. It's crazy because I have two beefy PCs connected to fabulous displays but I keep finding myself wanting to play on the Deck. I'm sure the novelty will wear off at some point but I'm going to enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Got a 512gb OLED for my brother for Christmas. Showed up yesterday. Hopefully this thing is as good as I've read.

Really loving the display here, which should not be surprising for anyone who uses OLED over LCD. So far the only downside for me with the OLED is games don't seem to have 40Hz/60Hz options any more, everything is 30/45/90 which makes sense but none of my games approach 90 and 45 does not look (feel?) right.

I remember complaints that the original model had some annoying fan noise, my revision was not affected. My OLED model does have some high-pitch noise when the fan is operating at high speeds, not very loud but it is noticeable. I might send feedback to Valve, maybe it is addressable via software like the last time.

I'm still playing mine daily and continue to be amazed by this little thing. The sweet spot seems to be visually distinct indie games and AAA titles from last-gen and before if you want to get max performance, but at the same time I'm impressed by how well some newer games run on it. So far I've finished Metro 2033 Redux, Doom 2016, We Love Katamari, and Condemned Criminal Origins and have played quite a bit of Resident Evil 4 remake and various indie games. Also briefly tested a bunch of other stuff.

My playlist for the Deck has grown massive and I only just yesterday got around to getting GamePass running on it. I'd prefer to be able to download the games but the cloud streaming works pretty well and I had fun playing Forza Horizon 5 and even picking up some of my old Xbox 360 saves for games like Gears of War and Oblivion. Definitely going to be starting new characters in Morrowind and Oblivion at some point.

For a couple of months i only played on my Steamdeck, but since couple of months, switched to my PS5 & laptop (RTX 3080).

Still love the device. Played Hogwarts Legacy on it and it ran well, even at launch. Also, i set it up as my main emulation device, for al the mayor legacy systems.

Anyone using AR (augmented reality) glasses with their Deck?

I returned my LCD Deck earlier this year as it was hard on my eyes, even with corrective lenses. I had also looked into the xReal Air AR glasses to couple with the Steam Deck a while back, but apart from the Steam Deck Dock there was no charge & play solution at the time since the glasses are USB-C, and splitters/y-adapters at the time I couldn't find any info where people got it to work for charge & play.

Well, now that the OLED model has increased battery life, I think I'll probably order as it looks like you can get up to 4 hours game play with the glasses from what I've been reading, which is more than I play at any given session. I also ordered the xReal glasses which should be here today.

But now I'm at a dilemma. I'm enticed by the ROG Ally Extreme since it's discounted. If I get the OLED deck, I'll never use the display in favor of the xReal glasses, so I would only be after it for the battery life. However, the power and resolution on the ROG Ally has me interested. And it also has VRR at 120 Hz. Battery life is poor (no better if not worse than the LCD Deck), but a charge adapter/splitter will solve that since I'll rarely play anywhere that is away from an outlet, if ever. And there's also USB-C laptop battery packs available now. I may pick one up tonight since it's in stock locally.

As gamers often do, the popularity of the console has spawned countless memes. One of the most prevalent is the idea that the Steam Deck's exhaust ports emit a strangely pleasing scent. Recently, Valve issued an official stance on what it thinks about players potentially huffing the fumes from their portable console. As you'd probably expect, Valve really doesn't want you to do that.

The news was first spotted by IGN, who noticed a Reddit post where a Steam Deck owner asked Steam Support if it is "safe to inhale the exhaust fumes" from their Deck. A few days after the ticket was submitted, Support got back to them and said, "As with all electronics, it is generally not recommended you inhale the exhaust fumes on your device. While there are no safety concerns with general usage, directly inhaling the device's vent fumes should be avoided. We understand that it may be a meme, but please refrain from this behavior for the safety of your health."

Have used my OLED deck essentially everyday since i got it. Truly an amazing device. 100% worth upgrading from your LCD model if you have one.

Best Steam Deck Games in 2023

A few caveats to note before getting into Valve's list: for one, these are the games that were played the most in 2023, but that doesn't mean that they're games which released in 2023. Some of them came out before this year, so the list is all about which ones were played the most regardless of when they released.

"This list includes the most played games on the Steam Deck during 2023, measured by their daily active player counts throughout the year," Valve's disclaimer on this list explained. "We include games with a Deck Verified status of Verified or Playable."

The nearly $700 Limited Edition Steam Deck OLED was released in November 2023 and came with all the improvements found in the normal OLED Deck, but also sported a translucent plastic shell. But this pricier, limited variant seems to be cracking due to overly-tight screws and possible issues with the special plastic used to create its transparent shell.

Since its initial release in 2022, Valve’s portable PC, the Steam Deck, has been a massive success for the company and helped usher in a new era of portable, Switch-like PC devices. In late 2023, to help stay at the top and beat out the new competition, Valve released the Steam Deck OLED, an upgraded version of the device with a fancier screen, more storage, and a better battery.
