The Lover is actually a good movie (in my opinion, at least). Jane March was also in another movie called Color of Night (with Bruce Willis). That was a "bad" movie that's mostly remembered for the nudity (and something more akin to some of the ones you mentioned).

It was controversial in that the director claimed at the time of the movie's release that the actors actually had sex, and Jane March reportedly had a nervous breakdown as a result, but he later said it wasn't true.

I still remember renting it on laserdisc from a small Mom & Pop video store. It is a little unusual that it skipped Blu-ray in the U.S. and went straight to 4K.

Not that unusual. MGM's US distribution lapsed, and they had no interest after releasing it on DVD anyway. Movie was not a hit in the US, but it was a big hit in France.

It's definitely a guilty pleasure, whereas like Zen noted The Lover is a good film, especially its cinematography.

Annaud's movies should all be phenomenal in 4K, every one of his films that I've seen look amazing and have gorgeous cinematography. The LOVER disc looks and sounds phenomenal, I'd highly recommend it as the artistic/production design of his movies are an integral part of their appeal, and this obviously brings you much closer to his intentions than a muddy old DVD would.

I'd also imagine it's the same disc as the Capelight, it has the Capelight logos before the film etc.

Got this from Bullmoose today. The digi-book is a good half-inch taller than a standard blu-ray case for those that care about that kind of thing. It's the same height as the Mondo Vision edition of Possession.

Hi all, just received my Best Buy preorder. I rip all my discs onto my personal NAS at home and when I went into the BD (not the UHD), it seems to be the German disc. The header is "Der Lieberhaber" and the main audio track and main sub tracks are German.

Can anyone else confirm who maybe picked it up in the US from either BB or Amazon whether that's across the board, or did Best Buy somehow ship me an import disc? All the packaging was US-english...

I think it just depends. My old The Exorcist and Citizen Kane digibooks (both by Warner Brothers) both are to regular blu-ray case scale.

I received my copy from Target. I'll reiterate. Odd movie to release in 4K. It's basically an artsy European sexual awakening movie about a transgressive relationship between a 15-year-old French girl and an older Chinese guy. My dad had a copy of this on VHS and I snuck and watched it when I was too young. Should make for an interesting revisit. And it's got Tony Leung Ka Fai from some Hong Kong movies I like.

Disappointed this comes in a DVD sized mediabook. Lame!

Does anyone know what the difference is between the two cuts?

I’m tired of all the “creative” packaging. Just a standard blu ray case with some thoughtful cover art is all that’s needed.

Found it very average when I watched it nine years ago. Will be rewatching mostly for the 4K HDR skin. Maybe it will be slightly better, though.
