I did allot of research on Blu-ray vs. DUD as well as PS3 vs. XBOX.

Came to the conclusion that the red ring of death has a direct connection to the red disc.

The Future is Blu!

Once Bill Hunt, from The Digital Bits, started leaning pro-Blu. I pulled the trigger.

Same thing with my projector.

My fiancee told me she would get me the ps3 80gb or the xbox360 elite for xmas. I did a lost of research and going back and forth between which one I wanted. In the end the unreliability of the 360 and the fact that I would have to pay extra for everything. (xbox live, wifi addon, and hidef movie add on) I chose the ps3 as it was more than a gaming system but also a multimedia system. Also realized that blu was better then dud. I have no regrets about my decision. and thanks to finding this forum I new about the 10 free bds w/ purchase of ps3 at wm after thanksgiving. I love this site

I was like a guy in High-School, and I went to two school's proms. I thought both girls were nice, but I waited, knowing one would be the better long term choice. After some time, one began chain-smoking, and grew fat and disgusting by sitting around eating pork-rinds and watching Jerry Springer all day in her Trailer.... the Other went off, became educated, and grew into a beautiful, and intelligent woman. I decided to leave the ugly girl in the trailer..... that's why I went with Blu-Ray..... I waited until HD DVD hit the wall.
I'm sure you know, but the definition of an acronym is:

"a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words"

Hence, PS3 is a "word".

That was also a major factor for me. I was pretty much indecisive about which format to go with, but buying a PS3 pretty much made up my mind for me.

While this thread may not be scientific or conclusive, it certainly supports the thought that Sony's idea to bundle Blu-Ray with the PS3 was a brilliant move. Srsly, I probably would have held off on HDM until the "war" was over if the PS3 did not have BD. And most likely, a lot more people would have done the same.

This would have led studios to hold off on going one way or the other and prolong this thing.

HD-DVD fanboys may say that PS3's don't count or that Sony had an unfair advantage with the PS3. Either way, I firmly believe that the PS3 helped the BD cause tremendously. And that is good for us all.

Bought my first 60gig PS3 on launch, which came with Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.

After viewing it on my HDTV, that seals the deal for me.

Default So, why did you go Blu in the first place?

I have been a home theater buff since the mid 80's or so and had my first surround sound set up and Pioneer laserdisc player back then. I generally follow what tech stuff is new and upcoming, and trusted Pioneer's judgment with being blu.
Also, there was such a long list of cool manufacturers on the blu side and just lowly Toshiba on the other it was just a no-brainer.

I'd read up on both formats prior to either being released. I liked what Blu-ray had to offer - larger capacity and higher transfer rates compared to HD-DVD. I also liked that discs with more than 2 layers had been successfully produced with gave me hope for the formats longevity.

After reading up a lot on the PS3 and Sony's plan for that (and finding out Sony's previous plan's for the PS2's lifespan) I had a strong belief that they knew what they were doing.

So to summarize, I guess it was a few things that had me routing for Blu-ray from the beginning:

1. Superior specs compared to HD-DVD
2. Strong belief that Sony had a good plan

What actually got me to buy into Blu was the software sales numbers, and the fact that I wouldn't be stuck with a useless machine even if I was wrong since I could (and did) get a PS3

On a side note, my father raised me on Sony so that probably helped. I never had any desire to own a PS1 or PS2, as I'm a Nintendo fan, so that probably hurt.

1) The movies that I wanted to watch were mostly in Blu... James Bond, Spidey, Disney movies etc.
2) PS3
3) I try to avoid anything with Microsoft's fingerprints if possible.

So, now that HD DVD is fading pretty fast, looking back, what was the reason you decided to choose Blu-ray? If you've supported Blu from the beginning, I'm especially curious why you went with Blu so early in the game.

I went Blu last June. Several factors went into it.

1. I was building a home theater PC, and wanted an integrated DVD drive for video. None existed for HD-DVD (which is still the case, other than the LG combo drive), which made me think - why wouldn't they make one? Media is media.

2. Disk capacity is 40% higher for Blu-Ray; I could see no reason to go with lesser capacity. Whenever I see lesser technology competing with approximately the same entry date, I get an eerie feeling.

3. Early on, I saw a 52" Sony XBR on display at a Best Buy; it was hooked up to a Blu-Ray, and was just awesome, playing Casino Royale. This piqued my interest, so I wanted to see what was offered in both formats. I saw several Blu-Ray movies I'd like; only one one HD-DVD. Not good.

4. It was obvious that there was a significant price differential. But with HD-DVD machines playing only 1080i at the outset, and all Blu-Ray equipment being native 1080P, I began having serious questions about what market the manufacturers were going after. With Toshiba being the only provider of HD-DVD equipment, it was another indicator that it did not have a viable future as a successful format, price breaks notwithstanding.

5. Glued-on foolishness such as Internet connectivity for essentially more advertising by the studios held zero interest for me. I was building an HTPC; what did I need to go to a dedicated box for, channeling me straight to the content they wanted me to see, led by the nose from some media disk? It meant two things: There wasn't enough space on the disk to put it on with the movie, and they were marketing that junk to appeal to non-savvy users who liked going to such sites with a "saved $500 on a PC" grin on their faces. And it wasn't wireless, it didn't make a bit of sense to me.

In the end, there was nothing pulling me to HD-DVD, and lots of reservations keeping me away from it.

I had a PS2 and wanted to upgrade when the PS3 came out, which I did in early 07'. Anyway I did not know what Blu-ray was but knew the PS3 would play the Blu disc but was unaware that movies came on them, I thought maybe only the games were Blu.

After awhile I started seeing HD-DVD commercials and started researching them and Blu-ray, thats how I found this site. From what I found on this site and others it sounded like Blu was better and I already had the PS3, although I know gamers don't play movies on PS. Anyway now I have over 60 movies and 6 games, I am about 80/20 as far as movie time/game time.

I think Sony did I piss poor job of advertising the first full year of the PS3's launch. I think that I should have seen TV ads showing the fact that PS3 played such a great format. Anyway, I do want to thank all of of you guys and gals though for putting this information out there and helping people find out the real deal.

My story begins with a high-def TV and a PS2, but no new games that were interesting to me. My local Blockbuster was offering Heavenly Sword free with a 60GB PS3, plus the 5 free blu-ray. Sold my PS2 and some games on ebay for much more than I thought I'd get and it was a no brainer.

I now own about 30 movies and 5 PS3 games. Unfortunately I've only had time to watch a total of 2 of them. Why? Our daughter was born right after Christmas. Nonetheless, I'm hooked on blu!
