And the day after, Toshiba, Paramount, and Universal will all stick their heads out of the ground and decide whether or not to carry on the fight another 6 weeks.

Forget Universal... the people running that studio are so incompetent and stupid that they'll go down with the DUD ship. All we need is Paramount to go at least neutral and you can call it game, set AND match!!

Why do I get the feeling that Toshiba has Paramount and Universal under it's thumb? There is something going on with these two studios to make them quiet and seemingly submisive to Toshiba for the moment. Paramount can jump any time and Universal's contract is now up. Maybe a pay off to stay put until all of the DUD players have been sold and all reordering of DUD players have been canceled.

I have this feeling of biding time to make what ever last profits may exist from the dying format until either the board of directors put and end to this nonsence or until the last poor consumer is finally taken for the DUD ride of his life.

However, even though from our best intelligence Universal is out of their contract, they won't be going blu anytime soon. They have millions of HD DVDs on the shelves and if they go neutral, HD DVD sales will plummet even more. Then, Universal is stuck with a lot of HD DVDs getting returned back to them. Universal needs to promote HD DVD a lot, liquidate the stock, then announce they have been working on blu-ray encodes and will have blu-ray titles on the shelf within the next few weeks. Think about what would happen to their upcoming titles sales if they announced they are supporting blu-ray, there is no way they would sell more than a few thousand copies, at least now a big titles like American Gangster might sell 15k copies.
This is a very valid point, but you're failing to see the cost of not going dual format. Every good business person knows that what your giving up with the cash isn't the cash itself, but rather the opportunity cost of giving up the cash. Universal stands to lose more over time not from not selling their stock of HD-DVDs but rather their lost profits they would be making by selling blu.

If there are any objective, fiscally minded people over in Universal's corporate they most likely feel very pressed to get their product out in the winning format.

Personally I doubt Universal will make any announcements tomorrow, I think for some reason Toshiba have themselves and their partners convinced there is still some validity to the HD-DVD format. Which makes no sense, but how else do you explain their actions.

For some reason I am not chomping at the bit to get my hands on Universal titles. Frankly, there is so much coming from Warner, New Line, Disney, Fox, MGM and Sony that I find it easy to dismiss the Universal catalog. Their HD DVD releases have been a mixed bag in regards to quality and I won't be lining up to buy anything they produce on Blu until I am confident of the quality. Paramount and Dreamworks are more important in my opinion.

Patience is a virtue.

+1...my thoughts exactly. The money they could make in Blu would heavily outweigh lost profits in HD-DVD overstock. It's like they're saying "I can't pick up the $20 bill over there because I already have a penny in my hand." It makes no sense whatsoever!

I am dual format. Searching for red movies this morning, I realize that all of the hardware links have been removed from the HD-DVD software storefront and Electronics pages. It could be a phase out or nothing. Maybe your inclinations are correct about neutrality. Transition strategy?

Yah, it's lousy here right now.

I hate freezing rain, because I know when I leave work in 7.5 hours I'm going to have to scrape all my friggin' windows and have sore arms all evening.

I wish I was at home right now watching Planet Earth [Blu-ray] Ice episode, instead of living it.
