(Originally posted by me in the KL thread)

A lot of this looks like the troubled Paramount films Looking For Mr. Goodbar, Little Darlings, and American Hot Wax may finally have their day in the sun. While all three have been dismissed as cost prohibitive repeatedly by KLI and others, the descriptions given here seem like they're very much describing those movies.

Also, KLI teased that Goodbar and Darlings would be coming from another boutique, and Vinegar Syndrome teased Goodbar in one of their YouTube videos. (I really don't think lining up your "favorite movies" in the order of "MRGOODBAR" is a coincidence. It would be like Mulvaney lining up his favorite films in the order of "AMBERSONS".)

Music has blown up a release before.

Considering Little Darlings was a whole year ago now and there hasn't been a peep, it seems like that release has either been canceled or it was a false alarm, unless this is indeed the title that "was previously with another label but they were unable to release it".

Nine movies that are new to Blu-ray. Goodbar and Darlings have only been out legitimately on Beta, VHS, laserdisc, and CED videodisc. American Hot Wax was strangely only out on CED, which is something I've never seen happen before.

KLI, how many of those "new to Blu-ray" movies are also not available on DVD? The Lincoln Conspiracy is one of them, so that leaves 8 "new to Blu" movies.

"At least one" of the Blu-ray debuts may be dropped. I can't imagine anything going wrong with a movie like Frankie And Johnny, or Paper Moon, or DeMille's King Of Kings (all of which desperately need Blu-rays, by the way). A hell of a lot can go wrong with the three music movies, and a lot has gone wrong with them. Hell, 90% of those three films' statures comes from the fact that they're unavailable because of their soundtracks.

Aside from Goodbar and Hot Wax, the only four 70s titles I know with music are Grease, SNF, Lady Sings The Blues, and Mahogany. All four are fully authorized and have been since the beginning. Other ones aren't going to blow up because there's nothing there to blow them up. Paper Moon is not gonna get blown up because someone wants a $10 million paycheck. If Kino tries to bump Pretty Baby to 4K, Brooke Shields or Malle's estate is not going to show up and say "give me $10 million or shove the release.

Looking For Mr. Goodbar and American Hot Wax are the only films from the 70s that are that prone to disaster. Frankly these two and Little Darlings are more volatile than a truck full of hand grenades speeding towards a film vault.

Moving onto the 80s...

At least there's not a warning about an 80s film being canceled. Considering Little Darlings is only six songs, there wasn't a colossal eff up in the legal department like there was with AHW, and none of the six acts are trying to squeeze Paramount or the boutiques, Little Darlings seems like the most likely of the three films to be released. It can also turn a profit on roughly 100,000 copies (hard but doable) compared to tens of millions of copies (impossible).

99 unannounced titles (3 or 4 may be dropped):

1920s x 1
1940s x 15 (1 4KUHD) (7 new to Blu)
1950s x 33 (20 new to Blu)
1960s x 8 (2 4KUHD) (4 new to Blu)
1970s x 10 (3 4KUHD) (7 new to Blu, though one will most likely be dropped)
1980s x 9 (3 4KUHD) (7 new to Blu)
1990s x 15 (13 4KUHD) (6 new to Blu)
2000s x 8 (8 4KUHD) (3 also new to Blu)

I find it interesting that at least one new to Blu 80s Paramount film will also get the 4K treatment. Doubt there's too many contenders there.
To do a standard Blu of Little Darlings, and a 4K/Blu-ray pack of Little Darlings, that would get the best results. Not only would it placate almost everyone (except the DVD crowd, who need to grow up), but there'd be no complaints about "why isn't this on 4K". Considering a sale means a copy left KL's possession, 100,000 units would move within a year.

It seems like KL would take it on while not making promises, and if the shit hits the fan they can bail without announcing it. When the first Paramount deal was signed, KLI went on the record to say that Little Darlings was roughly a million, and Goodbar was a case of same shit different day. They also explicitly said they didn't have either one of them, and then a few weeks later came back and teased LD as coming from somebody else.

This time around, KLI has been rather shy to even mention LD, but has once again teased Goodbar as coming from somebody else (if not KL or Paramount themselves, I'd guess VS).

I'd like to at least see behind the scenes. I'd like to at least know what's going on with these films, what Paramount's doing, what the boutiques are doing, etc. I sent Paramount an email requesting info on the films, and got no answer. At this point I don't expect to receive an answer. All we can do now is prepare for the public domain dates of these films: 2072, 2073, and 2076. Each day that goes by, the less money people have in their pockets and the less incentive the studios have to pay them.

Bad news, Goodbar is still a tease at best and is still unconfirmed. Good news, VS and their partner label Cinematheque have just announced Little Darlings with its original soundtrack on limited edition 4K/Blu-ray and standard edition 4K/Blu-ray.

Considering KL said someone else had Goodbar, and considering one of the guys from VS listed his favorite movies in the order that all the first letters spelled “MRGOODBAR”, I think it’s highly likely that VS, and possibly their partner label Cinematheque, will be releasing Looking For Mr. Goodbar in the future. Considering it’s probably the most notable music rights issue for a film (Academy Award nominee, arguably the real reason Diane Keaton won her Oscar for Best Actress, one person jammed the film up looking for a pay day), it would be amazing if that one could finally see the light of day.

This film is playing at the Roxy Cinema here in Manhattan this Wednesday, on 35mm. I’ve actually never seen this film in its entirety, so I’m going to go.

It’s a double feature with Star 80, also showing in 35mm, but that’s too depressing and readily available to watch online and I can’t leave my dog home alone that long, so it’s Mr. Goodbar only for me.

Two movies desperately in need of a Blu-ray release. Goodbar hopefully comes from VS soon.

Star 80 is a toss-up between WAC, Criterion, and Shout. If Shout has it, we have to hope they don’t ruin it. If either WAC or Criterion has it, then we have to wonder when the hell it will be released. Both boutiques are known for moving at a snail’s pace.

What is all the hype about? Aside from the nudity and surprisingly stylish cinematography in some select scenes, this felt muddled and had no real message. Plus horribly dated with its Catholic girl gone bad plot.

I saw this in the theater when I was in High School. It was certainly scandalous at the time. Again, these are dated perceptions from that era and not how society views these things now. The scandal at the time was a woman seeking her physical and sexual fulfillment. But really it was about the men's unhealthy view of their own (repressed) sexuality. The scandalous themes and storylines for the time:

1) Recreational drug use

2) Gay and Bi-sexuality

3) Recreational (for any better term) female sexuality

4) Sex work

All of those storylines were kind of taboo, especially in the way the film handled them (again for that era).

If we're getting The Keep and Iced, we can rule out those two. Jade? Doesn't immediately spring to mind based on that.

Also, is it just me, or does the font on that tease look similar to that on the LFMG poster? Compare the 'O', for example. Even the 'A' has that weird thicker on the right side thing going on:

I love hate this movie because it really is a great film, but the ending to this movie stays with me way too long after I've seen it and really puts me in a bad place. I watched it last year after not having seen it in over a decade and I think that was probably the last time I'll revisit this because I just can't with the ending of the film. It's too much for me. I'm conflicted because I'm a cinephile and I feel like I need to own this movie

I agree. The ending always haunts me for a while after I see it. Yet I want to have it in my collection! Especially with this music only trailer as an extra:

I always thought Diane Keaton should have been nominated for her performance. It's that good. But then you realize that she was already nominated and won the oscar that year for Annie Hall.
