It's a movie that really makes you feel like taking an acid bath after, because it appears so real in its brutality. It's not about blood and gore, just that the characters are so fakkin' deranged. Compared to this The Devil's Rejects is a total party movie. Henry's a great movie for sure, but revisiting it is an intimidating proposition for me.

I've seen this only once, in cinema, must have been early 90's. Curiously enough, I still remember scenes and lines of dialogue almost beat to beat. Wonder if I should check it out again. I remember this being little bit on the bleak side..

IMO, Henry's one of those movies like The Deer Hunter - five star masterpiece that sits high up in my favourite movies of all time, but it's so f***ing powerful that I only need to rewatch it once every five years. 'Cause, man does it stay with you.

While it's definitely bleak, its unflinching honesty also makes it a strangely hilarious movie too (I like ma' comedy like I like ma' coffee - black, no sugar ) but I think that's probably something that comes through more on subsequent viewings once you can get past the grime, the filth. I can't be the only one that laughs as the credits roll? No? Just me. Okay. I'll make an appointment with a psychiatrist.

Is this disturbing like the kind of "nothing really happens disturbing", but people stare at each other and it makes you think? Or disturbing like there's some kind of rape/blood/gore for the majority of the movie?

I'm going to buy it either way, but I'm curious..

This is one of those movies I've always meant to pick up but never did. I even skipped the last Collector's Edition release. Maybe it's time now.

Was this filmed in 16mm?

I assumed they'd be using the same underlying remaster from 2016 which seemed to be a North American affair. The blurb for that was -

Henry is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. This new digital transfer was created in 4K resolution on a pin-registration Arriscan film scanner from the original 16mm camera negative. Dirt, debris, scratches and warping were manually removed using PFClean and grading was performed using Baselight.

The original stereo mix was transferred from the 35mm magnetic reels at 96k using a Magna-Tech. Once ingested, digital restoration was performed using ProTools HD and Cedar DNS software. The 5.1 mix was created from the ST composite track with added sweeteners and ambiences.

In celebration of its 30th anniversary, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer returns with a thrilling, cinematic presentation that cements its reputation as one of the most harrowing and original American films of all time. Dark Sky Films, a division of MPI Media Group, proudly presents it in a brand-new 4K scan and restoration from the 16mm original camera negatives, and featuring a new 5.1 audio mix from the stereo 35mm mag reels, all approved by director John McNaughton.

EDIT: Though Arrow are touting it as a "Brand new 4K restoration from the original camera negatives, approved by John McNaughton".
But is that 'Brand new... to the UK!? Or brand new, brand new? Seems strange they'd go back to the well again so soon considering the original remaster was amazeballs. As for the Dolby sauce, your guess is as good as mine.

It's disturbing on many different levels... but most of all in a very realistic way.

I too can only watch it every 3 to 5 years and have to be mentally prepared to take it all in.

My last attempt was around 3 years ago and I had to turn it off half way through because I found it emotionally draining at the time.

I'm thinking this might've been done by another label if it not got Dobly. Doesn't matter a great deal, and David M will likely be encoding the Arrow regardless, it's just odd when Arrow not has Dobly

If that's the case, then this is another of those times where I'm left scratching my head as to why the film just isn't packed in on the bonus Blu-ray. At only 82 minutes long and with several extras being in SD, I'm guessing that it could be fit on the bonus Blu-ray, thus allowing Arrow to drop the expense of an entire disc and a second run of packaging, while also increasing 4K UHD sales by default.

It's a beautifully directed film which makes its content all the more disturbing. I can see why Scorsese is a fan. I'm sure Truffaut would've been too as it reminds me of The Honeymoon Killers.

Good luck with that. I pre-ordered their exclusive edition of Mario Bava's Shock, and it arrived ten days after the release date...

Personally, I would avoid Arrow if you want it early. I'm may wait for HMV. I've been having some issues with arrow's dispatch times recently.
