They're opened up slightly compared to SF’s 1.85:1 framing, but that doesn't make them open matte.

Here's an example: https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?go=1&...190542&i=0&l=0

Note how in the first image, there's a ton of space at the top and bottom of the frame (aka open matte) and the second image is of the same frame, but matted to 1.85:1.

Of course it's not open matted to 1.33. Who in their right mind would think they would do that? They're open matte in the context of the Paramount's compared to the Shout's. Nobody was ever expecting them to be anything other than a scan for HDTV ratios.

But that's precisely what open matte is for a film shot with a spherical lens: 1.33:1. You're using the wrong terminology is my point. 1.78:1 is NOT OPEN MATTE for a film like Friday the 13th that was shot in 1.33. The movie is still matted when shown at 1.78:1. It's not like this was shot in Super 35 and they opened up the framing to 1.78:1 (which in that case would be open matte).

You're getting wrapped up in semantics. Again, I said it was the context. There is matting in the Shout presentation of the same scan that Paramount uses. But Paramount removed the mattes. Hence open matte. Again, context. It can refer to more than just one ratio, since matting is still involved. Besides, even though Friday the 13th movies were shot spherically onto a 1.33 frame, they were never intended to be projected that way.

It's not semantics, you're just straight up wrong. There is matting on BOTH the SF and Paramount discs. Paramount did not remove the mattes, they simply matted the film to 1.78. If they removed the mattes the film would be in 1.33:1. And obviously the movie wasn't meant to be shown in 1.33:1, that's not what I said. I said the term open matte refers to a spherical film shown in its native 1.33:1 ratio. ANY type of cropping (whether it be 1.66:1, 1.78:1, 1.85:1, 2.00:1) means that the film has been matted for widescreen. The Paramount just has different matting than the SF discs, but it is not open matte.

My sense was that Paramount removed the mattes from the intended 1.85:1 framing, producing a 1.78:1 image area on an HDTV; more unmatted image would be visible at taller ratios (if represented in the scan and formatted for display).

Paramount did nothing more than change the aspect ratio from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1. I guess technically they removed the 1.85:1 matting, but then matted the film AGAIN for 1.78:1. Either way, it's still matted widescreen. That's what I'm trying to say. If the movie was open matte, it would appear fullscreen on your TV with black bars on the sides (like when you watch an old Hollywood film such as The Wizard of Oz - it would appear like that).

Thumbs up

I collect every edition that they release for this franchise. I'm "that guy."

If this follows the tradition of the first 2 Steelbooks, it will be the original blu-ray in there, which has the red/blue crappy 3D which is barely 3D.

Since the first two Steelbooks, they have done 4K scans of the first 4 films. Sadly, that probably will not be in here, despite being in Paramount's recent 8 movie collection.

I already have this on pre-order as a collector's item, not as anything that I ever intend on opening and using.

I own the Scream Factory box set and the Paramount red case collection. Yeah, I'm "that guy."

Technically speaking, did Paramount re-matte the film, or just encode the unmatted image--opened from 1.85:1--for full display at 1.78:1 on a widescreen display or projector?

Example, I could watch The Shining in a "full screen" transfer, unmatted from 1.85:1 to 1.33:1 for display on a 4 by 3 television, exposing most of the image area on the vertical...and I could also watch The Shining formatted for widescreen, unmatted from 1.85:1 to 1.78:1 on a 16:9 television. In the latter case, a lot less visual real estate is revealed at top and bottom, though still unmatted.

In other words, does the conduit for viewing--HDTV, projector, 4 by 3 TV, what have you--"matte" the image, or just border the viewable area?

I'm sure "Be Right Back" is a line of incidental dialogue spoken in this movie, but the fact that they feel they need to invoke Scream on this thing really makes me think they're still ashamed of this incredible franchise.

The days of being embarrassed and ashamed are long gone but the series could use someone at Paramount that is a fan, or find a way to seek fan opinion.
I have a feeling "Be right back" isn't even in the movie, I might put it on to see out of curiosity. I tried to cheat and search online and found this list of last words from F13 victims which, reading it written out, made me laugh a few times https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.p.../FridayThe13th

Anyone know if this is the best buy link?
Doesn't say steelbook but I didn't think a standard version was going to be coming out the same date.
