Came out in 83, so likely next year for the 40th anniversary. Also, a lot of the boutique labels get two year exclusives, and the Shout disc came out July 2021. Best bet, fall 2023.

Hoping they can get a commentary track from Cronenberg; the Shout disc has an overkill of four tracks, but nothing from the man himself.

Don't expect the missing footage. It was destroyed forever. No one could find it, not even Shout Factory for their 2021 4K remastered Blu-ray release.

If this releases close to the original Shout! release date you may be right. Escape from L.A. came out two years after the Shout! release. This will probably follow suit.

I'd take The Dead Zone in 4K day one, just like I got the SF disc day one. What a great movie! I'd also take almost any Cronenberg in 4K they offer.

Wasn’t there rumoured production team vhs tape copy of the workprint which Paul Anderson was (again) rumoured to own?

I really doubt Paramount is going to include it even if it was 100% confirmed it existed. If Shout! Factory didn't include it on their edition even after delaying its release date, I dont see Paramount even caring to look for it.

Paul W.S. Anderson does not own a VHS tape.

From Anderson himself:

Quote:
That movie has become a great seller for Paramount. They asked me if I wanted to do a director's cut. I investigated, and unfortunately, the material just isn't available anymore," Anderson told the San Diego Reader when asked about a potential director's cut. "We shot that movie before the DVD revolution. DVDs gave movies a great afterlife. You had to generate more material for the DVD — behind-the-scenes stuff, deleted scenes, etc. Event Horizon came out just before that. Because the movie wasn't a giant theatrical hit, the studio just didn't keep the material. The footage doesn't exist anymore to reinstate it in a director's cut."

Anderson said that most of the negatives had been thrown away or stored poorly. At one point, there was a rumor that some of the additional footage had been found on a VHS tape. Anderson said that he's never seen the tape, as producer Lloyd Levin, who was rumored to have it, moved to Spain.

Face it, all we're ever going to see of the deleted footage is what made it into the existing extras. That stuff is gone, just like the gory trims from Total Recall.

the way studios are run infuriate me.
why would they ask him if they wanted to make a directors cut? meaning, wouldnt the studio know if they even had the footage to begin with?
why do they expect the director to know where the materials are?
why bother asking him?
who's running what?

Shout Factory is re-releasing their Blu-ray movies in 4K is what they're doing. They just might re-release their Friday the 13th boxset again in 4K, right after a lot of people just bought it.

Bruce Campbell had a beta tape that Anchor Bay used for Army of Darkness’ director’s cut DVD when AB couldn’t find a suitable source. Of course, it was revealed a few years later that MGM Hong Kong had film elements for it.

I bought it at release, but I don't regret doing so.

If this is a Paramount studio release, there's a damn good chance it won't even include a standard blu-ray at all (which I still want, personally, as I still have far more blu-ray players than 4k players in my home).

Plus the studio release is unlikely to have all the bonus features the Shout release did. You have both, and you have best of both worlds.

Far more important than any possiblity of deleted scenes is, will they get the film's geometry right this time?

Seeing as this 4K transfer has been around for a couple years at this point and is on both Shout's BD and 4K HDR streaming with the correct geometry then I'd say it's fairly likely that the 4K UHD disc will be fine

This was the first movie I ever saw in the theater while high and it absolutely terrified me. Incidentally, two days later it was the first movie I ever saw in the movie while drunk and I thought it was hilarious. I watched it last year sober and my final impression is something closer to the latter but I'll still have to pick it up for nostalgic purposes. And it should be a lovely disc.

European retail sources are also reporting that Paramount is preparing a 4K Ultra HD release of Event Horizon (1997) for the coming months. We’ll post more as we learn it.

Yes! Yes! Yes!!!!!!
