Best picture nominee? That's a hard no... but I went into this yesterday with absolutely no knowledge of what it was about and was entertained...
I'm not Latino or part of the LGBT community. My first wife was from south America so I had no issue with the Spanish (although grateful for subs for musical numbers)...

Someone mentioned a "campy" quality and that's the way i took it... there are massive plot holes and it was as fantastical as a Latino soap opera.. don't mean to be obtuse, but is that why members of the community are upset? That the subject matter wasn't handled respectfully?

In a nutshell, you hit it on the nail. That's how most Mexicans, victims from the cartels, and members to the Trans community feel. What's made it worse Audiard admitted during an interview with Mexican press that he didn't bother doing any research on the first place since he already knew of Mexico by what he's seen on the media and its obvious how he caricatures the cartels, transitioning, and those who were disappeared.

Plus his casting producer didn't help him at all saying there's wasn't any Mexican actors who were good to play any of the main roles in the film...that really pissed off all Mexico since for those in the Latino community most of the Latino stars are made in Mexico via popular telenovelas, theater productions, and music stars. Hence when they see the film and Selena Gomez tries to act and sound horribly they just laugh and in the same time get mad at the film.

This was awful. As a Latino who is fluent in Spanish, this was unbearable to watch. Quite possibly one of the worst film experiences I have ever had. Couldn't finish it. The acting and Selena Gomez's accent is laughable.

I hope this loses every single Oscar it was nominated for, and breaks The Color Purple’s record of most Oscar nominations without a win

In prep for the Oscars a little over a month from now, I decided to watch what I can of what's currently available streaming wise. After getting through a few, Emilia Perez was next on the docket yesterday.
I went in with low expectations. Everyone was saying how bad it it is and how undeserving it is for all it's Cannes praise and Oscars noms. And I gotta say, I thin there's a lot of hyperbole around that.

Now let's get it out of the way, but this is truly just a mid movie. A shame since director Jacques Audiard is typically brilliant with the likes of A Prophet, Rust and Bone, Dheepan and Sister Brothers. So I would have thought this should be a cinch for him. But nope, he def dropped the ball when crafting this one.

Acting wise, it's all over the place. My god, Selena Gomez is just a nightmare. I don't know if it's plastic surgery or her lack of talent but she can't emote a correct feeling, at all. It's one look, for everything.
Zoe, bless her, is trying her damnedest to get notoriety and eyes on her. It shows. It comes across over the top in some moments. But thank god for Karla Sofía Gascon, the saving grace of this film. A talent I had no idea of and I'm happy to discover from this film.

When it comes to what transpires in this, I found that a lot could of happen but never does. Like there's obvious story beats it could have done but the film never touches and it feel like missed opportunities. Instead, it wanders around and doesn't end of doing much. I believe that's probably because this was originally written in a more operatic way, which is evident when you look at it that way.

Speaking of opera, the music is just...I just don't know who thought that some of the lyrics could pass. It's almost like songs one writes in a pinch. Like the song is due tomorrow and it's 11 PM. Compositions are beautiful at times but then everyone starts singing and it all feels underwritten and quiet, an idea I don't hate for a musical, it just didn't work here.

Last but not least, I think the thing that's made everyone mad is the potentially insensitive elements. Now I'm ignorant to how much of the Mexican culture got treated in this film. From what I saw, anything that was done was at worst a micro aggressive level of treatment. I don't think anyone involved wanted to make a culturally rude film. There are certain things I could see as problematic for sure such as song lyrics or moments in the musical numbers. But for anyone screaming about cartel stuff this is a film about just that, so of course it's going to focus on crime. I don't think it's saying all of Mexico is like that, but that for Emilie Perez and her dead life is so entangled in crime and the cartel despite her wanting to be comfortable in her body and life.
On the other side of controversy is the trans issues. This I'm a bit more knowledgeable of and yes they really missed the mark on this one. Yeah, that song in Bangkok is bad. And the fact that this is about a a cartel leader transitioning THEN helping heal the country they had a hand in hurting is insensitive and does some unnecessary damage to the trans community. I also saw the community say how they struggled with how this is another trans movie where it's about surgery and they're the only one of their kind in the story. (Seriously, there has to be a movie a about a trans character losing their car keys or something. Something that could happen to anyone.)

While I can see what Audiard was trying to do and say, he completely missed the mark with a preachy drama with quiet musical numbers that disrupt the communities and cultures it's singing about. His heart was obviously in the right place but it just didn't work out. Is this worth the vitriol and anger? Personally, I don't think so.

It makes me wonder what if he decided to make this an opera, which it started creatively as. Could this have worked at that? Who knows.

Oppenheimer, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Parasite are not as good as Emilia Perez?
I would almost understand if you didn't like the last two years but freaking Parasite?

The Substance is my pick, but some probably get cold feet on that one for being too "edgy", "on the nose", or whatever.

She seems quite hateful in her personal life. Ironic that people try to champion this superficial film that makes a mockery of Mexico's ongoing despair as 'progressive.'

Come on...

This film is cursed. It's like one step forward, two steps back.

I just hope it does win, not because it's good, but I want everyone to realize just how stupid the Oscars are and lose respect for the studio circle fest it's always been.

Unfortunately, if that didn't happen with The King's Speech or Green Book I don't think it will ever happen. We love the medium and the artform so each year people will hope their favorite productions can get recognized.

I have a strong dislike for this film, particularly the negative treatment given to the Mexican people and their culture. In my opinion, this is not the best way to portray a character of the LGBTQIA+ and Trans community and all their suffering nowadays. I hope this film goes down the toilet where it should be.

Also, for many years now, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Science has been a joke, example; they bypass Brokeback Mountain that deserved the Oscar for Best Picture and nominate almost in every category this awful acting, bad script, bad directing and disrespectful film.

This opinion comes from a straight male.

Regards,
