Thanks, I've had a look and those are a bit worrying. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Blu-rays don't actually look superior though do they? Unless these discs look really bad in motion?

They are like Shout editions where it looks great in spots and shitty in others

Wasn’t sure I’d upgrade this to 4K after grabbing the 2020 Blu-ray, but after giving it another spin, that’s a definite yes. The Presents disc just looks…off. It’s better than the original Blu-ray in many ways, but it has problems of its own. Skintones are unnatural, colors seem more muted, and there’s black crush. I’m curious to see if those are issues inherent to the master, or if they will be alleviated in full 4K. If nothing else, the use of HDR/Dolby Vision should improve a lot of that.

Just got the 4K in today, and since the Presents Blu-ray was still fresh in my mind, I wanted to give this another look. Watching in Dolby Vision on a 65” Sony A80J OLED via Panasonic UB820. Only about 15 minutes in, but this looks a lot better to me. Skin tones are natural, colors appear to be accurate, and the black crush (which was especially noticeable on the Presents disc during the party scene when Dan and Alex meet at the bar) is no longer present. The restaurant scene during the rainstorm, where Alex is smoking the cigarette, looks accurate too. Thus far in Dolby Vision, it’s a solid upgrade from the previous discs.

Edit: Quick reassessment. After watching through to the end, the PQ did show some inconsistency at points throughout. However, in comparison to the previous Blu-rays, the 4K Dolby Vision is still the best I’ve seen this look. I went back and skimmed the HDR-10 layer too. As expected, the bright scenes with low bit rates (and some are at MPEG-2 Blu-ray levels!) are the ones that look the worst.

I was not that impressed with the Paramount Presents BD so hopefully the UHD BD is up to par.

I have the Paramount Presents BD of this, and it's good -- but uneven. That said, it is largely an improvement over the smeary original BD.

So I'm very glad to be getting FATAL ATTRACTION in UHD -- but if it's using the Presents master, expectations should be tampered.

It had that HDR to SDR conversion vibe to it.

The original/alternate ending is much better. They need to include that in 4K as well, preferably an option to watch the full movie with it instead of the usual one.

I think the alternate ending would have played better if the movie came out 10-15 years later. Audiences in the 80's needed that original ending.

80s' audiences were mostly young getting used to all that FRIDAY 13th nonsense for thrills with the killer is not really dead. So they loved that crap.

Yep...pretty much ALL thrillers - even ones ostensibly aimed at adults - devolved into a slasher climax well into the 90s.

This echoes Roger Ebert's review. The one where he flat-out stated, "Give me a break."

From an artistic standpoint, yeah, probably. But it was the theatrical ending that helped make it such a hit.

Well said. They did the right thing in the sense they wanted a successful movie, and they got it.

If they included the alternate ending, it'll probably be included as a special feature like the previous home video releases. Personally, I like the theatrical ending because it was more dramatic and suspenseful than the alternate ending. I'm still peeve that Glenn Close didn't win Best Actress for Fatal Attraction. The Members of the Academy must have something personal against Glenn Close because, she's been nominated 8 times for her excellent performances in other movies, and The Academy have never given her an Oscar that she deserves.

Correct, as long as they include it I will be happy. Otherwise not having it would make the release seem incomplete. I would much rather be able to watch the entire movie in 4K with the original ending and not the "fixed" one.

Completely agree on Glenn. I challenge anyone to watch Moonstruck, then Fatal Attraction and say that Cher had a better performance

The amazing thing is that it wasn't hypothetical. Lyne had the original ending in there for the test audiences, and they got super pissed at the end. they wanted
[Show spoiler]the Glenn Close character to die a horrible death.
Thus the change. Everyone I know that has seen both agree than the original ending makes it a better movie. Personally, I think it's a different movie and far better if left intact.

The original ending was done better in Leave Her To Heaven. Theatrical climax is fun erotic-thriller goodness.

Pre-order up on Amazon, releasing September 13th. Says it's been supervised by Adrian Lyne, with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision.

Quote:
Stylish and sexy, FATAL ATTRACTION took audiences to terrifying new heights with its thrilling story of a casual encounter gone terribly awry. Looking better than ever on 4K UHD with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision, supervised by director Adrian Lyne, this box office smash was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Actress (Glenn Close).
