I enjoy the first one a lot from a visual standpoint. Unfortunately, it's not really a good movie.

And I've been attempting to keep watching the 2nd film on HBO Max and it is a struggle. In other news, HBO Max has Action Jackson on there again. So that's cool. Always wanted to watch that one and it was fun for sure.

Horror Reboot ‘Return To Silent Hill’ Will Star Jeremy Irvine & Hannah Emily Anderson; Plot Confirmed With Filming To Begin Next Month

Quote:
EXCLUSIVE: Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) and Hannah Emily Anderson (Jigsaw) will lead horror reboot Return To Silent Hill.

Filming is due to get underway next month in Germany and Eastern Europe on the project, which will mark a return for the original Silent Hill director Christophe Gans.

Written by Gans, Sandra Vo-Anh (who collaborated with Gans on Beauty and the Beast) and William Josef Schneider, the movie is based on Silent Hill 2, the second and most popular game in Konami’s hit video game series.

The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.

Pic is being produced by Victor Hadida (producer on The Crow and Silent Hill franchises) under his Davis Films banner, Hassell Free Productions’ Molly Hassell (The Crow) and David Wulf (The Card Counter). As we revealed last year, The Veterans is handling international sales, with CAA Media Financing repping domestic.

Originally released in 2001 for PlayStation 2, Silent Hill 2 is widely considered the best game in the series. Last year, Konami announced three new games in the series and the idea is for the new film and games to play off each other to help marketing and engagement.

Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean starred in the first Silent Hill movie, which made $100M back in 2006.

“Return to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, they’re willing to go to hell to save someone,” said director Gans. “I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.”

“Christophe and I have been working closely with our partners at Konami, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today,” explained producer Hadida. “You will still find the iconic monsters – but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and Konami’s updated game together will propel the franchise forward for years to come.”

Hmm. Didn't recognize the name, so I looked him up. Never seen War Horse, but I heard it (and he) was good. They're definitely going younger for the role, it seems. I hope they don't pretty him up too much. I suppose it could work, I've just always seen James as a little older and world-weary. He needs that heaviness to him, bags under his eyes, the whole shebang. Guess it depends on how they portray him. I've been horribly wrong with casting before, so I'll wait to see more before I judge fully.

Hopefully the horror aspect of this new film is the main focus more than focusing too much on the details of trying to cover all of the story elements.

I wouldn't mind a Silent Hill film as one of those Survival style movies (like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre for example) with hardly any focus on the intricate details of trying to tell the history of everything, where the hero has to reach the other side of town to find the safe zone, maybe inside The Room, and they have to survive the onslaught of all the monsters in Silent Hill.

Trying to tell the history and exposition of how Silent Hill originated; that's potentially the main weakness of the first two Silent Hill motion pictures. By focusing on how it all started and why everybody is the way they are, it's taking away from the mystery and dilutes the horror aspect IMO.

Stir of Echoes was an effective horror film in terms of mystery, until they revealed who the main ghost was and how they got there. Then all the mystery and horror faded away IMO, and it became more of a revenge movie instead.

Found a new synopsis for the film:

Quote:
Driven by the shadows of his past, James Sunderland returns to Silent Hill to find his lost love, Mary Crane. But the dark, depressing small town is no longer the place from his memories. He meets characters who seem all too familiar and who try to divert him from his search for Mary. The longer he searches for Mary, the more he begins to wonder if this is still reality - or if he has fallen into the dark underworld of Jacob Crane.

Lost love? I guess it's a weird way to say dead wife but shouldn't her surname be Sunderland? And who the actual OC f*** is Jacob Crane....

Yeah, it looks like Christophe "Fellas, is it feminine to care about your daughter" Gans is back at it with screwing up Silent Hill and it's story. Is is too late to wrestle the rights out of the hands of this idiot?

Jeremy Irvine stars in the film as James, a man broken after his relationship with the love of his life, Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson), ends. According to its official synopsis, the action kicks off “when a mysterious letter from her calls him back to Silent Hill, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. While James desperately searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and begins to unravel the mystery of what happened to the town. But as he descends deeper into the darkness the secrets he uncovers lead to a horrifying truth, and James finds himself struggling to hold on long enough to save his one true love.”

Cool Pyramid Head is closer to the game design though looking into it, seems like it's a picture of a concept art model and not the final film itself.

Gans is great at having his team capture the look of Silent Hill, but now how to make it truly horrifying and not like an amusement park walk through ride? That's how I feel about the horror elements of both movies so far. Nice visuals, but not scary at all IMO.

The game itself, Silent Hill 1 on PS1, definitely made me dread playing it, so that was scary IMO because of the slow build up music, the demonic babies lurking in the pitch darkness and giggling as they approach to stab the hero's legs, and some truly horrific, very dangerous monsters that can slice apart the player without mercy in the game. In the movie, I don't get that sense of dread.

I like Radha Mitchell in general as an actress, but it could be the dialog or situations that just weren't horrific IMO. But it's all different depending on one's perspective, so while the horror musical score of The Shining or Hereditary is the scariest element of those films along with the slow moving framed shots, someone else might not be phased at all by that.

I wish they could get the exact music from Silent Hill 1 and 2 into this film. I think that can help. When I hear some of the more cheerful piano music of the prior 2 films, it doesn't invoke any sense of dread, but more of a light, cheery atmosphere. I would hope that music would be reduced in this new film. Nothing cheerful IMO.

But it's not for me to say, other than as a fan of the games' great sense of horror and creating dread.

A number of strong 3D pop outs in there. The regular shots could be stronger more often, but definitely worth seeing in 3D for 3D fans, agreed. I wonder if this will get any kind of 3D conversion since no word of filming in 3D like Revelation 3D, on blu ray 3D.

I’m so pumped for this! Gans definitely respects the tone and visuals of the games, so I’m hoping for at least a halfway decent adaptation. Hopefully a trailer drops soon.
