This has been known for nearly 2 weeks. Blame Paramount.

It's definitely among the worst looking of my imprint titles (along with Day of the Locust). Still a film worth having in the collection if you can get it for like...10 bucks.

As I said before, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is still a different master than the Imprint despite not being listed on the specs. We will have to wait and see for reviews.

What are the issues with the transfer, Imprint’s poor encode notwithstanding?

They both are the same price with SF being able to be found at a discountprice, the only difference is the Commentary that is added the region coding (not sure if Imprint is region free or locked)

It’s possible Paramount did a new transfer on their own without telling Shout (who may be unaware of the transfer on Imprint’s disc). It would be just tragic if this classic is still stuck with that old 20+ year old master, and for bullshit reasons too. You’d think Shout would know better than to use that master. I would say it could be why Kino passed on the movie, but they could’ve probably done their own transfer if they wanted, and they did release some ugly old masters from their Disney deal.

Even if this ends up being the same transfer it’ll be cheaper than the import and have less awful encoding.

The Imprint is atrocious. I'd say wait and see how this one turns out. Just because it's not a brand new master doesn't mean it's not a newer master than the Imprint.

Ah mama mia DNR machine is on:

Hi there,

Paramount supplied us with the HD transfer, and we did some clean up.

We can’t confirm that it’s the same print that Imprint used, but we assume so.

Hope that helps,

SF

That doesn’t really tell us anything. It’s still possible that this is a new HD transfer from Paramount. There are more than a few Imprint discs that were from older masters that later got new scans from Paramount.

If you read the quote, they said that they cleaned up the master = DNR. Then, they said they assume it's the same master that Imprint got, but not 100% sure, that means that Paramount didn't do them more favors than what Imprint received. Finally, they didn't mention 4K scan, so that means that even if the master is 'different' than Imprint's master, that doesn't imply it would be better given that it's an HD master not a new 4k or 2k scan master. But, keep being the optimist that you are, even when all the signs point to an underwhelming product.

A lot of assumptions there! Biggest one is assuming the Shout customer service rep knows exactly what they’re talking about. And that additional cleanup means DNR.

I LOVE the radio show episode that this film was based on. It starred Agnes Moorehead, and it's a master class in suspense. The movie version just doesn't compare. Barbara Stanwyck is one of my favorites, and she plays it well, but they had to pad the story out so much to make it feature length that it lost its power.

The original is an extremely simple, claustrophobic story of an invalid overhearing plans for a murder on the phone, and only realizing once its too late that she is the intended victim. One character, one setting, and slowly mounting tension. The movie adds in additional locations, a complicated backstory and an entire crime plot with double-crossing characters. I suppose it works on its own as a film, but it's no where near as effective as the simple radio show that inspired it. (IMO)

Well, that customer service agent did his research obviously, he wouldn't know details like the correct technical word for the master used and that clean-up was done to the master. If he didn't know, he most likely sent an email to the people that worked on putting the release together and got the answer. I am not jumping into conclusions but no new master with Paramount can be a tough call between DNR mess or an outdated dvd age old master put on bluray. The only saving grace is the compression: if this release gets it better than Imprint than that will the only winning factor other than that 1 added audio commentary that is exclusive to this release.

The HD master is fine. It’s available on digital platforms and it looks good. The Imprint has terrible compression and that’s why it looks so bad.

The Imprint looks like a 720 upscale for whatever reason. Glad to hear the digital version looks fine.

I wish Kino would have gotten this from Paramount. To me, it just doesn't seem like a good fit for Shout.

They already have these Film Noir in their collection. How is this one any different?

^^It's not any different. I said the same thing about a few of those...back in 2019. Just my opinion my friend.

As another member posted at the top of the last page: "Sorry, wrong label."
