Looney Tunes Collector's Choice Volume 1 - May 30

The 1930-1935 stretch of cartoons isn't as interesting as, perhaps the mid-40s through mid-50s cartoons, but there's more than enough. I've seen all the Harmon-Ising Merrie Melodies and they're generally fun. Even more than the 1929-1932 B&W Silly Symphonies, mostly because of the Warner studio music.

The Bosko and Buddy cartoons are all over the place, but there's enough worthwhile. I haven't seen a lot of the post-HI/pre-color shorts, but the vast majority of the Porky cartoons for the latter half of the 30s and most of the color Merrie Melodies are quite entertaining. More so with restored color, I'd imagine.

There's 270 shorts from that decade and one could easily assemble a 50-short compilation or two that doesn't have any duds. Probably would help if they included every Tex Avery and Frank Tashlin color short, plus all of Clampett's Porky shorts.

WAC can print anything they want in the Warner library. They just have to have permission first.

WHV has to allow them to release anything that falls under their umbrella. They mentioned that a lot on their Facebook page back in the day.

That’s what I was thinking too, I’d totally love to see a complete release of every Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies short from 1930 to 1969 in chronological order. But as this is listed as Volume One, I know that’s not going to happen as it’s very obvious that a Volume of Bosko and Buddy shorts would be much harder to sell than a volume of Bugs and Daffy shorts.

That being said, there are a number of shorts featuring the most famous characters such as The Unruly Hare and Cracked Quack just to name a few that we have seen HD restorations of but have still yet to be released on DVD or Blu-ray that will hopefully now finally make it to disc.

Since the Platinum Collections supposedly came to an end because there wasn’t enough budget to restore enough shorts for a fourth volume. There really is no need for them to stop making this series anything soon as we know that there have been at least 700 Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts restored in HD between what’s already out on Blu-ray and what was restored for HBO Max, WarnerMedia Ride, and MeTV over the past few years.

For this reason, Warner needs to avoid cluttering up this set with any useless tchotchkes like shot glasses and Funko pops. Take the money they'd spend on that junk and use it towards more discs with more cartoons.

Like you said, hundreds more cartoons have been restored in HD since the Platinum Collections, so there's really no excuse for anything but a meaty package of cartoons.

I'd like to think, hope and wait to see what this new regime at WB Discovery and David Zaslav does with the company. Part of me thinks we should write a nicely worded letter to the man, asking if he would consider releasing the entire Looney Tunes catalog in chronological order, fully restored, perhaps by WBA.

They need to do like they did with Tom & Jerry and put a disclaimer at the beginning. History is history regardless of how ugly and dirty it may be.

He just pulled the entire Looney Tunes 1950 through 2004 catalog off of HBO Max to save on fees (256 "episodes"), there's not a chance in hell he cares about a labor of love like that which wouldn't generate the ROI that his garbage reality shows do. That guy symbolizes everything that's wrong with big studio management and has done amazing amounts of damage to the availability of back catalog releases in the name of saving money by refusing to pay actors and directors residuals.

For the Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary discs, it was originally going to be filled solely with double dips until Jerry Beck convinced WHE to sprinkle a few new-to-Blu-ray shorts in.

I'll just keep my expectations low for this one.

Since a vast majority of the Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies shorts have now been restored in HD, I hope that we get a good amount of shorts that have yet to be released on DVD or Blu-ray yet.

But I too think that this will likely contain many shorts that are very well known and have been released on DVD and Blu-ray many times. Such as pretty much any short that was included in The 100 Greatest Looney Tunes Cartoons book.

What collector would choose a set with double dips on it? Especially since, as you said, it would cost as much to include a "new" short as a double dip.
