Ah correct, I forgot they made a new restoration of Autumn Sonata in between the two Criterion releases.

Had a feeling that a CC edition would be coming along! It was one of their best-selling Blu-ray titles, after all. Deciding to do a 4K release without HDR is a dealbreaker for me though. Just placed my order for the Dolby Vision import.

I figured that this one would be an early upgrade. I've always viewed it (along with Seven Samurai) as one of Criterion's signature titles, and would be an "easy" pick to get the upgrade.

No DV/HDR is weird. Think about it the Blu-Ray included is and SDR version. If you own the old BLu-Ray or the Big Bergman set that is also a SDR version. Then you have DVD or DIgital versions that are out are also SDR.

But I've come to accept what Criterion is.

Can we at least get Face to Face on Blu then! Mini-Series and Movie version would be fantastic!

I tend to prefer CC, but to be honest I don't understand how they planned this release...

CC:
No HDR at all
Swedish LPCM Mono & English DD Mono
English subs

BFI:
DV & HDR10
Swedish LPCM Mono
English subs

Both are equally english friendly in that both have english subs, and the english dub on the CC is just sacrilege. Swedish is the way this classic are to be seen.

Got some coupons etc on Amazon UK, so I went with the BFI for 2£ delivered on this, but to each their own.

That means they're basically putting no effort into this 4K release. I have a thing for Academy Aspect ratio films too. I can't believe this.

BFI also has the FiM encode, as well. On that alone, it's already better and I'm a big CC supporter, but let's get real here. FiM rocks.

Got confirmation from Jon Mulvany that this release is in SDR rec709.

Wtf? Did they give any reason for the lack of HDR? There’s literally a fully completed 4K/Dolby Vision grade already in existence.

If I had to guess, BFI/FiM may have done the HDR/DV pass themselves. Criterion seems content to use what the rightsholder/filmmaker approved even if it's SDR. They definitely have a "no HDR? no problem!" attitude on their releases.

Yes, this is a no-brainer. BFI all the way.

Big love for CC, but they don't seem to understand the warmth and love that DV and HDR brings.

2023 is going to be a real banger for Criterion with this approach.

Wasn't there a few subtitle errors on the BFI, or am I mistaking for a different title?

Sloppy translation. See:

(I should add here that the image quality on the BFI disk is really, really good. You win some, you lose some)

Did Sydow dub himself in English?
