Took a peek at this I like what I saw. I read the Negative isn't around. Opticals take a hit but overall much better detailed then the original BD which I personally never like. Looked degrained and resharpened whereas this new 4K looks naturally sharp.

Glad the transfer is strong - I'm a huge fan of the film so I'm excited to get my copy when it comes. Thanks KL for doing what looks like a great job with the transfer.

It's just a shame that the site gave it to Dr. Svet Atanasov to review. I'm tired of reviewers who pompously think they know better than the film they're reviewing. Just hope his negativity doesn't dissuade newcomers who have never seen Stalag 17 from purchasing it.

can’t stand svets or potts’ reviews at avs . the most verbose, tedious , obsequious reviewers on the net. Soon as i saw the word “delineation” i clicked out

Svet has some of the worst takes on films that I've ever read or heard.

I'm watching the UHD now. I don't have the ability to take 4K caps.

That said, the upgrade is STUNNING.

I A/B'd a couple of scenes from the old Paramount BD to the new disc. There's no comparison. The dated HD master on the old BD looks like garbage against this new disc.

The packaging says it is, indeed, a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, and it looks it. It looks like it was filmed yesterday - on 1950s B&W 35mm stock, of course. I love seeing classic B&W films upgraded like this.

That's what I get for not reading the slip notes lol. It was RAH who mentioned the Negative being AWOL in his review a few weeks back. I sold my old BD disc years ago because it looked flat and lifeless to me then.

Does anyone else feel more comfortable when a 5.1 remix is NOT included?

I haven't picked up the Eureka of Touch of Evil since I'd already picked up the Kino, which also didn't include a remix.

Every time I see a remix is included I start to question the authenticity of a 2.0 track.

Watching mine right now and it looks extraordinary. I thought the old bd looked fine the last few times I watched but this is clearly a massive upgrade. You can tell by the screenshots that the older master doesn’t even compare. Great disc!

This is a worthy upgrade of a masterpiece.

Strange that Harris would be incorrect about the status of the OCN, but the KL packaging is very clear that it was the element they used for the new master:

This forum. Why am I always letting you people talk me into upgrading to 4K UHD movies that I have barely watched my blu-rays...of?

I thought I would only have to "upgrade" modern visual effects filled action movies and maybe a few old Hollywood Technicolor epics.

Adding Stalag 17 to the wishlist.

35mm film has a ton of visual information.

Add to that the fact that most HD masters of 35mm movies were done 20 years ago.

The BDs out there are, in most cases, woefully inadequate to show all the detail any movie shot on film has.

I can't think of a single UHD I've bought of a movie shot on film where I wasn't impressed by the increased image quality. (T2 might be the only one, but that's widely acknowledged to have been badly botched.)

Even movies like Casablanca and Singin in the Rain, where the OCN is lost, still look way better than their BDs.

For those movies where the OCN survives, like Stalag 17, it feels like seeing the movie again for the first time.

Same here. I own the Eureka release and when this was first announced I told myself, since I had just watched that one a year ago and probably wouldn't watch it for years to come, there was no point in buying this new 4k. But after reading this forum, just ordered it today. Same happened with Fargo and NBK recently.

Sometimes houses lie about the existence of original negatives.it’s been done before (eg pandora and Flying Dutchman, Imprints release of Spencer Tracy’s The Mountain ).

It’s not like there are inspectors from the securities commission or FBI that raid authoring houses when claims are suspect.

Shouldn’t the average score of the review be 4.4 instead of 3.5.

22 divided by 5. What am I missing?🤔

It's because of the reviewer and not the aggregated score.
