It didn’t need it, the running time of the movie is about 99 minutes. They could’ve used seamless branching and put both cuts on one disc the same as the German BD, that also has DTS HD MA 5.1 audio for both cuts.

My joy about BD-50 discs for both the Unrated and Theatrical has been short lived.
Just read about the Unrated Cut only having 2ch Uncompressed PCM.
Why the f*ck would ViaVision do that?

I also read a reviewer stating since the cuts to the gore are minimal, the Theatrical is the better cut.
I disagree. Any kind of censorship, even if it were just the 3 seconds of a knife going
[Show spoiler]into a backpacker’s back
, plus extended reaction and rolling
[Show spoiler]severed fingers
, it’s still censorship. The Aussie release deserves 5.1 Uncompressed Audio on both cuts. I feel like I’ve been ripped off.

Both discs only have around 27GB used also. Bitrate is higher than the German release but I doubt the PQ is better.

Wow. That means ViaVision’s decision to only have 2.0 on the unrated is, for lack of a better word, criminal. If there is plenty of space, it boggles the mind that theoretically, they could have easily put a 5.1 lossless track. Even an Uncompressed 5.1 PCM track should have been doable.
If the German release could use seamless branching for the Unrated, then surely they would have had access to 5.1 audio files from Lionsgate (which has their branding all over the disc itself).

The only thing I can possibly think of for this braindead decision, is perhaps ViaVision didn’t want to pay royalties to DTS to use their audio codec twice. And hence, they only wanted to pay for it’s use once…

Sorry to break up the discussion about the audio and extended cut, etc, but John Jarratt's message on my Blu-ray is too funny not to share

He also signed my Wolf Creek 2 with "Go **** yourself"

He was absolutely awesome. A real laugh.

Gee he's looking old now. Years ago we used to live in the same small town and I'd bump into him quite often. This was back when Wolf Creek had not long come out. I can remember a couple of times when I was doing the shopping and someone who wasn't a local would recognise him in Coles buying groceries and he'd be wearing basically the same clothes he wore in the movie. They'd do a massive double take and the look on their face was priceless.

Does anyone know how timely Via Vision is when it comes to shipping pre-orders? Do they ship on release day or afterwards? I ordered the standard edition and haven't heard anything yet.

I don’t know if you’ve heard anything from them yet, and I don’t have any experience with direct orders from Via Vision, but I just received a shipping notice from OrbitDVD for mine.

It took a week after release date before they shipped it. It's on the way from Australia.

Unrated with Dolby Atmos.

And all we get is a lossless 2.0 on the Aussie release. Figures.

All in all, I do question the benefits/merits of a UHD upgrade.

Since the film was shot on (mostly) HDCAM in the early-ish days of HD, it will be a 4K upscale that one would think won’t really gain much in 4K.

Hence, I am in no rush to import the German Turbine transfer. Happy to stick with the VVE 1080pBD, unless the Atmos track is a game changer.

However… IF there is a local 4K upgrade, with Atmos for the Unrated, circa $50-$60, then it will be a case of:

Anyone know how this release stacks up against the Turbine one? I am tempted to get the Turbine mediabook for the 4K, though I've read on here there is a slight audio glitch at one point. I have the old Optimum Blu-ray and the recent Lionsgate steelbook which also came with a digital copy, so I don't know if it's worth getting the VV or the Turbine, but I am a big fan of this film so I'm tempted.

I figured this would be the answer—I placed an order for one from Diabolik today. All the other covers are long gone of course, but I'm happy with the standard cover which was the US theatrical one-sheet. I saw this film on New Year's Eve 2005 when I was in high school and I've never forgotten it. I was obsessed with it for years and am still a big fan. I'm excited to have a 4K disc.

As I mentioned above, I ordered the Turbine 4K mediabook from Diabolik which is on the way, but I couldn't resist grabbing the Via Vision standard release on Amazon just for the hell of it. I am watching it now (the "unrated" disc) and at about 4:58 there is a noticeable glitch in the transfer where the frame suddenly gets scattered with pixellation. It only lasts about a half-second or so, but it's very noticeable. I popped in the disc of the theatrical cut and it appears there, too. I'll be curious to see if this is present on the Turbine 4K or not.
