Looking forward to watching Brian's Video on Sony's A95L "King of TV®" video.

Default OLED Prevails Over Mini-LED LCD in TV Shootout

Looks like the Sony XR65A95L was the clear winner for 4K OLED. Hisense is a more budget display and finished last or toward the bottom in most categories.

"The results of the Value Electronics 2023 TV Shootout give OLED the clear edge over mini-LED LCD TVs but it’s worth noting that not all brands were represented in the testing."

Now is a very bad time to buy a TV IMO.

Of course if you need to buy a TV, you need to buy a TV.

But next year we are going to see MINI LED sets that offer 5000nits from at least 3 brands, over 3x the brightness of the current brightest consumer MINI LED, and 4x the brightness of the current brightest consumer OLED. The amount of dimming zones will also increase by roughly 5x.

Both of these massive improvements mean that 2024 flagship MINI LED TVs will be in a totally different class than virtually any 4K TV released to date. They will be the first 4K HDR sets that will be able to operate with basically no tonemapping on the majority of content, while current HDR sets require a good deal of aggressive tonemapping on a large percentage of content. And thus, these new 4K HDR sets will be the first ones that allow you to see the true HDR grade on the majority of your content, rather than a downconversion; still not as good as MicroLED, but a big step up from where we are today.

Personally, I don't see OLED having an answer to this, because the tech is mature and LG has rarely achieved more than a 10-15% brightness gain year to year, nevermind 300%-400% that they would need here to compete with the new tech. Samsung I believe has stopped development of OLED panels, so LG would have to be the ones to figure it out.

As a result, we could see next year be the start of the phase out of OLED that happened with Plasma when much brighter LED sets took over the market.

So before spending a pile of cash upgrading your TV, might want to wait to see how things play out by the end of next year.

I’m still holding off on an 83” QD-OLED or OLED w/ MLA. The 77” models are really tempting, but it doesn’t make the upgrade worth it for me when the sizes are the same as my current set.

FWIW, Samsung is soon going to be offering their smaller-sized wall-mounted microLED displays in China, India, and South Korea. These are sub-110 inch digital-signage-type designs and not the previously shown TV sized designs that the consumer market is clamoring for, so they are still very expensive and geared towards the luxury market, which Samsung is laser-focused on. They will be build-to-order sales, except in the few locales where a limited number of units will be stocked at key retailers, like Samsung's own stores.

Yeah I think MINI LED is going to be samsung's flagship consumer solution for at least another 5 years. It seems 2023 is a transition year for them, as they have stopped development of OLED panels (they will still have OLED models for now, just they will be buying panels from LG), and are starting to really tap into the brightness capabilities of MINI LED for their 2024 models. Their first 3 generations were more about refining the dimming algorithm and cost optimization, and it seems gen4 they are going to go next-level with picture quality by massively increasing both brightness and zones.

MicroLED will be the ultimate destination that offers the brightness and burn-in free traits of MINI LED combined with the per pixel dimming of OLED, but I believe they will keep those displays at the ultra high end for quite some time to come. Although, those 98" MINI LED TVs at $40k ain't exactly cheap!

Samsung will still be making QD-OLED for years to come. You can go into the SM of S95C and tweak a few setting to boost PL to 2000 nits. Not advised with current thermal pad, but i would not be surprised Samsung uses a true heat sink in 2024 and boosts PL to 2000 nits.
