I give the game grief, but it really is a one of a kind video game that achieved things not many games have for exploring a Galaxy. Just wish Creative/Custom modes bugs were fixed since they were introduced. And multiple terrains per planet would be great. Not just water, land but very thick, tall Endor-like forests (never in the game), vast dune deserts, Tall Mountains, fields of grain, rolling green hills, towns, cities, and more all on one planet. No such thing exists in the game unfortunately. |

That's interesting you can now be an archeologist and collect fossil bones to assemble and sell.
I'd really like a full on 10 hour RPG story mode like you'd see in a full story game, but it's clear Hello Games is not interested in that and will continue to offer different new features instead. The lite story aspects of No Man's Sky are mostly basic and focus on mining and collecting parts to reach new locations. I didn't find any new story mode in the options. That would be great if they ever did that. I think they'll finally be moving on to their new game once that launches soon. |

Is this worth picking up now? I never played the game on release and read a lot of criticism, however I've also read a lot of positive feedback on improvements that were made since release, along with additional content being added.

Each planet is procedurally generated, so it's all the same terrain and repeating buildings no matter where you land, resulting in often extremely predictable planets. You begin to land, see the surface up close, and that's the entire planet, defeating the entire purpose of exploration since it's all the same. Underground or in the water are their own terrains, but those repeat infinitely too on each planet. The game absolutely needed Earth like planets where the terrain varies as you explore. That could've been awesome. Plus the day/night cycle on planets are too short, and there is often severe weather literally every five minutes on planets. As Mwynn mentioned, a very basic story mode with mostly just talking to aliens. You can create your own base building which is neat at first. A lot of mining and earning minerals and building parts. If you can get it for 9.99, I'd say it's worth it. I paid 59.99 at launch, got my playtime out of it, but don't feel inspired to play for more than 10 minutes each time. Procedurally generated maps are boring IMO. |

Technically, No Man's Sky is an achievement for endless planets to land on that are random. Some good variety of creatures and some plants.
Gameplay, No Man's Sky is very repetitious. This is a situation where I rather have 10 human-created planets, each extremely unique and some Earth based with all different environments, locations and places to visit unique to each planet, rather than blanket cut/pasted buildings and plants and computer generated one theme planets. Much like Starfield. I'm a huge fan of exploration, so NMS should've really appealed to me long-term. It's clever, but lacking IMO. And after the huge fan fallout at launch in 2016, I understand why Hello Games continue to offer free DLC updates to redeem their image. It was pretty bad there, but like with Cyberpunk 2077, gamers can be forgiving. The Kind of planet I love exploring? Ghost Recon Wildlands is a good example. Tons of variety and fun places to go and visit. All on one planet. |

I've seen No Man's Sky sale price down temporarliy to 9.99 digital years ago for PS5 on PSN, so it could drop to that in June during the Summer Games Fest. That was when Horizon 1 was given completely free by Sony, and Ratchet & Clank PS4 too.
Hello Games should take 20 different and best environment textures and landscapes, and put them all onto one planet, and then call it Earth Mode. You would start on that planet and could discover 20 different ecosystems as you traveled across the land and water. I'd love that, and it would have a complete story mode too, with missions on the planet to go to. Not fetch missions, or the repetitious math puzzles, but actually story paths with difficult moral choices for your character to make, like in Fallout 3 and 4. That kind of story. There should also be puzzles using your digging and building skills. Maybe some prizes could only be accessed by building a ramp, then having one of your faster vehicles drive onto it, fly up and grab the prize where the jet pack couldn't reach. The Ship should also be able to crash. Instead, it just bumps into things and no true damage as it automatically avoids crashing on autopilot at times. Enemy lasers can destroy it at least. Lots of potential but Hello Games is not interested in those things it seems. Just more new tools and generic features in No Man's Sky. It's their game, so they can make those decisions as they please. |
