Yeah, I would say I disagree with the review 100%. At no point did it feel teal to me and I've seen some teal. I'd give give the PQ an easy 4 or 4.5.

I don't own this release, nor have I ever seen the film, so I don't know what it's supposed to look like. But I have seen quite a few 70s films (including French) in my lifetime, and at least in this shot, the colours of the DVD certainly look more authentic than the Blu-ray.

Interesting, it’s hard to tell from screenshots, but the colours do look more what you’d expect on the DVD image (which also appears to be a bit sharper). The blu ray image looks similar to the Eureka release of The Bullet Train. Hard to make any definitive judgements from caps. Svet hates the 4K of Mean Streets but personally I think it’s great.

The DVD screenshots look over-sharpened and magenta-heavy to me. Yes, a couple of the blu screenshots look slightly green but it doesn't seen troubling. Anyway, I'd forgotten about this release so will be picking it up soon.

Scheider really wants to kill Trintignant in this and the man is a machine that can almost not be stopped.

I watched this in the English version and I can't imagine watching it any other way. Kinda curious how the French version plays out, but I don't think it would make much sense since almost all of the characters are played by Americans and are supposed to be Americans. One issue is when there is French dialogue there are no subtitles, unless you turn on the subtitles on for ALL the dialogue. English and French.

This is one of those movies where you questions why they can't make films like this anymore or at least often. 70's films were a hella of a drug for film fans.
Sounds like this is a very safe bet. I rely on feedback from other members as well as trailers for films I'm unfamiliar with and so much of what Kino announces is unknown to me. That, and I'm in a bit of a Kino rut since I've only picked up one Kino title in the past month and a half (The Boogens) pushed me to order a copy of The Outside Man. I love movies like this.

Just picked this up on the sale, and it's fantastic! Thanks to you folks heralding it.

Love the smog-soaked Los Angeles look and the insane ending.

I might pop in the French version just to see how it plays out.

This movie is awesome! Such a joy to discover a new favorite from the '70s! Major kudos to Kino for putting out this beautiful release with a great slipcover. PQ is excellent, best to ignore Svet's review outside of the issue of the theme song not being present in the opening credits which is odd but seems to be a rights issue.

Sort of like The French Connection meets No Country For Old Men, set against a perfect slice of life '70's LA.

Five stars!

Totally agree with everyone else giving this one high praise. What a kick ass 70s crime/drama! The injection of a bit of European flavor into the gritty LA setting adds a nice element. Ann-Margret was great as well.

Michel Legrand's music is always fantastic. I especially liked the organ piece during the funeral scene, very baroque.

Picture quality looks killer. Overall excellent release by Kino.

I have been wanting to watch this ever since it was released, but I’m going to wait till the next Kino sale this summer to buy it as it’s not an immediate high priority film to buy for me. Also a mix between No Country for Old Men and The French Connection sounds just amazing.

I love the movie and I like Trintignant but I think the movie would have been even better with Belmondo or Delon in the main role.

I don't think you can ever have too much of Delon/Belmondo, but...

[Show spoiler]I like the choice of Trintignant here because my sense of the backstory (I may be wrong here) is that he's not a professional. He's an amateur in a "Killing of a Chinese Bookie" situation to pay off a debt. Which brings nuance to his character more than those other two might as classic action stars.

They both could also be great, but casting an actor not usually associated with action movies to my mind results in a far more cynical movie, one that makes me care more because he's more relatable. While Scheider is the pro assassin, Trintignant is doomed by fate, caught in a matter of no personal concern to him, and he's being used and disposed. He's not cold blooded, he's not an assassin by profession...he's an outside man. In a tragic sense.
